Dangerous goods

Dangerous goods (also called hazmat) are regulated substances or materials that may pose a risk during storing, handling or transporting because they contain flammable, pressurised, corrosive or otherwise harmful substances. ‘Dangerous goods’ also refers to consumer products such as laptops, smartphones, household cleaners, spray paints and cosmetics.

Amazon Global Logistics prohibits all dangerous goods except these Section II lithium batteries:

  • UN3481 for 1) packing instruction (PI) 966 lithium ion batteries packed with equipment and 2) PI 967 lithium ion batteries contained in equipment
  • UN3091 for 1) PI 969 lithium metal batteries packed with equipment and 2) PI 970 lithium metal batteries contained in equipment

Note that standalone lithium ion batteries (UN3480) and lithium metal batteries (UN3090) are prohibited. Amazon also reserves the right to reject certain products, even if they fall into the above categories. For more information, see Requirements for lithium batteries or products that ship with lithium batteries.

The following transport labels and marks are required for Amazon Global Logistics ocean and air freight:

Class Division Name Transport mark
9 - Section II Lithium Ion Batteries in or with Equipment
9 - Section II Lithium Metal Batteries in or with Equipment
Note: Do not use the images above to label your shipments. They are for information only.

Additional dangerous goods information

Some products that are regulated as dangerous goods do not require warning labels or phrases (for example, cosmetics and speakers containing magnetised material). A product without labels or warnings might still be categorised and regulated as a dangerous good.

For more information, see the dangerous goods identification guide, required information and documentation, and review process.

If you think your product might be regulated as a dangerous good, ask the manufacturer or supplier. These pages also offer more information:

Depending upon your location, other country-specific or local regulations may also apply:

Dangerous goods and your responsibilities as a seller

All dangerous goods sent to Amazon must comply with all applicable regulations to ensure safe and correct transportation, storage, handling and labelling. Failure to comply exposes employees, carriers and customers to potential health and safety risks.

In order to sell dangerous goods through Fulfilment by Amazon, you must:

  • Keep informed about the current relevant legislation and regulations;
  • Provide complete and correct information about your products;
  • Provide complete, correct and up-to-date exemption sheets.

Important: When you ship inventory to Amazon, you warrant that all products comply with all applicable legal requirements, and that the information you provide is complete, correct and up-to-date. Providing incorrect or incomplete information can result in your products being blocked from sale, and you might be asked to take corrective actions, or you might lose your Amazon selling privileges. Products that are identified as unfulfillable dangerous goods upon receipt at the fulfilment centre can be disposed of at your expense without reimbursement to you.

All dangerous goods, other than those listed above, are prohibited from the GSS Freight programme.

For more information on shipping lithium batteries, see Requirements for lithium batteries or products that ship with lithium batteries.

Amazon reserves the right to reject certain products based on the danger they pose, even if they otherwise fall into the above categories.

Finding additional information about products that might be regulated as dangerous goods

Any warning labels or warning phrases on a product package indicates that it might be regulated as a dangerous good. Some products that are regulated as dangerous goods do not require warning labels or phrases (cosmetics and speakers containing magnetised material, for example). The absence of any labels or warnings does not mean they are not dangerous goods.

If you think your product might be regulated as a dangerous good, contact the manufacturer or supplier and ask if your product is regulated by any of the regulations listed at the beginning of this article.

Products, other than the accepted lithium batteries, are prohibited from shipping with GSS air freight and GSS ocean freight.
