Guidelines for Food & Beverages

Selling Grocery Products on Amazon

To send food and beverage products to be fulfilled through FBA, you must first verify that you fulfil all the requirements to sell in the Grocery category. For more information, visit this page.

Food and food products are subject to many regulations in the EU. EU food regulations in particular aim at establishing and controlling high quality standards for food and food product hygiene, animal health and welfare, plant health and preventing the risk of contamination from external substances. EU food regulations include, among other things, the following:

  • Specifying rules on appropriate labelling for food products. Product labelling is often required to be in the language of the EU Member State where the product is sold.
  • Establishing mandatory refund and recycling schemes for beverage packaging in several EU member states.

FBA product restrictions

  • Items must comply with EU food safety & labelling requirements, and in particular with specific requirements for the UK.
  • Temperature-sensitive products must be able to withstand a minimum temperature of 10°C and a maximum temperature of 30°C for the duration of the product’s shelf life without adversely affecting product quality. Carton markings must not include storage temperature requirements unless expressed explicitly as a range from 10°C to 30°C (during transport the products are exposed to normal outdoor temperatures).
  • Items consisting of or containing chocolate or other ingredients which may melt will be rejected if delivered between 1 May and 15 October. Sellers are responsible for all inventory monitoring. All chocolates must be removed before 1 May. Failure to do so may result in the disposal of products without compensation. Please note it can take up to 3 weeks for the removal process to complete. Sellers will incur a £0.60/unit removal charge.
  • Expiry-dated products are allowed for FBA as long as the perishable food and beverage items have a minimum remaining shelf life at the point of receipt into the fulfilment centre of 90 days. Units that are within 50 days of the expiry date will be removed for disposal by Amazon with no reimbursement to you. For all other non-food and beverage items with an expiry date, the remaining shelf life must be greater than 18 months at the point of receipt.
  • All expiry dates must be the same across a single SKU in the same FBA inbound shipment.
  • All products containing alcohol are prohibited from FBA. Please note, however, that Amazon UK is currently running an FBA Alcohol pilot where selected merchants can test selling alcohol products on FBA. For more information, please contact Selling Partner Support.

Preparing Products with Expiry Dates

Before you send any perishable items with an expiry date to an Amazon fulfilment centre you must:


  1. Flag the ASINs on Seller Central with the “is-expiry-dated-product” attribute. For instructions on how to flag your ASINs before delivery, click here.

All Grocery sellers must:

  • Label each individual unit with an FBA product label.
  • Place the FBA labels on top of the original barcode.
  • Ensure that the expiry date isn’t covered by the label. If the expiry date is covered, print the expiry date and place it on the product.
  • Ensure that the expiry date is readable on the box, or packaging for bundles, sets and baskets.
Note: Sellers can opt for Amazon’s Label Service, where we labels your products at the fulfilment centre for a per-unit fee.

Packaging Requirements

There are specific requirements for sellers sending liquids and glass products.

Once your units have been packaged and labelled, sellers must add FBA delivery labels to the outer package, as with any regular FBA consignments. Also, packages must be clearly marked as “food”.

Organic Certification

To sell organic products, you must carry a valid, in-date organic certification in accordance with EU directive 834/2007. You must also adhere to the following product listing guidelines:

  • The item_name attribute (in the inventory file template or in the Add a Product tool) must include the word “organic”.
  • The speciality attribute (in the inventory file template or in the Add a Product tool) must be set to “Organic”.
  • Each product must be listed on the delivery note individually with its respective quantity clearly indicated.
  • Delivery notes must be labelled in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
  • All shipments of organic products to an Amazon fulfilment centre must be sent from an EU country.

Customer Return Policy

Customers are able to return food and beverage products as per the terms of the Amazon Business Agreement. If the returned products are in pristine condition and still within the minimum remaining shelf life of 105 days, they will simply go back on sale. However, if the product is damaged, it will be marked as “unfulfillable” in your FBA inventory. Then, you can create a removal order for the product to be returned to you or disposed of at the fulfilment centre at your own expense for a per-unit fee.

Delivery Notes

  • Products that contain food and beverage (apart from alcohol) can only be delivered to our fulfilment centre in Dunfermline (EDI4).
  • Deliveries containing food must be clearly marked as “food” on the outer packaging.
  • Food and non-food items (including personal care and hygiene items) may not be delivered together on a pallet.
  • The product temperature at delivery may not exceed 30°C.
  • Single-use deposit containers are not allowed.

Please note that we may particularly refuse shipments in the following cases:

  • Leaking liquid or other leaking substance
  • Visible damage on the packaging
  • Damaged seal
  • Bad or foul smell
  • Signs of pest or insect infestation
  • Contaminated packaging
Important: Amazon reserves the right to refuse or dispose of any shipment or inventory if any food units are not sent in accordance with our Business Solutions Agreement or these guidelines. Amazon reserves the right to dispose of your products without reimbursement to you.
