Is it against Amazon's rules to 'repurpose' an existing listing for a different product?

I have a listing with 90 4 and 1/2 star ratings but I am considering discontinuing the product for other reasons. Is it against the rules to change the listing for a different product to keep the ratings?

You cannot change the listing for a different product as the UPC/ASIN is specific to that item, and the ratings are for the original item, not the ‘replaced’ one. Just not possible.

Of course, it is. Why do you expect to keep the ratings if you change the listing to a totally different product? You are proposing to keep the ratings for, say, a Mars bar and change the listing to a tin of baked beans. Absolute nonsense

Happens all the time, usually by hijackers but against TOS

If the original line is unprofitable, is there any way to bring a similar product and build a variation? eg If your original widget is oversized, bring a smaller version to save on postage and create a ‘size’ variation parent, ‘small’ and ‘large’? Your reviews should share across both children ASIN’s so long as they remain in the relationship.
Note - you can’t just build a parent with 2 items which do not belong together, or you’ll get a stern email about variation abuse. (eg hiding your old ASIN as ‘old1’ and making your new item ‘new1’)
