Private Label & Generic Listings

Hi everyone,

I've only been selling generic products thus far into my Amazon seller journey.

I'm looking to head down the private label listing route shortly and wanted to know if I'm permitted to sell private label products under my account that has only sold generic products? Would I need to change anything or is the process the same?

Thank you in advance.

Hello @Seller_l1XryxZ0s7usR,

This is Sakura from Amazon.

As I understand it, you would change from selling generic products to branded products, and it would be your own brand, correct?

@Seller_l1XryxZ0s7usR,

Got it! In this case, the brand attribute can't be changed from generic to branded. Here I am sharing more information that you can find on the Error message related to Amazon generic product policy :

"Can I change the brand string on my product from “generic” to branded, or branded to “generic”?

As part of Product detail page rules, if you create a new product with the brand string “generic” or its local translation, the brand string cannot be changed later. Brand string changes from “generic” to branded, or branded to “generic” are not allowed to protect the integrity of the product. If you choose to re-brand a product, you must create a new product rather than updating an existing product. This is true even if the product is unbranded and does not change materially after the brand string change. This includes branding a previously unbranded product."

Does it give you some clarity?

Sakura

You can sell branded and generic products. As Sakura has pointed out, you can't change a listing from Generic TO a brand but you can create new listings that are branded.

In your case - you would ideally signup to Brand Registry (so you need a trademark and a product with the brand permanently affixed (ie not a peel off sticker). You might want to get GS1 barcodes, though you could get GTIN exemption for the brand in the category you wish to sell in (as I imagine you would have done with the Generic goods anyway)
