Is a JAN code the same as an EAN code?

Is a JAN code the same as an EAN code, when listing a new product? As JAN codes do not seem to appear in the dropdown.

 JAN (Japanese Article Numbering) is another name for the EAN-13 barcode. The first two digits - the country code - must be 45 or 49 (Japan). 
 Seems so, I guess you’ll find out if you try and use one.
