Approval Requests
To finish my request for approval to sell, I need to supply an invoice. However, surely I am not expected to purchase items which I may then not receive approval for?! Am I missing something?

No, your not missing something, they expect to see an invoice for the goods if you want to get approval.

Amazon are very strict on who sells on Amazon. They are making sure you are buying from official sources so goods are genuine, safe in the EU and not against any copyright.
It’s also to show that if you are buying as above that you can list correctly I.e items are new and your a business seller and paying the correct tax etc.
