Fake Reviews From A Competitor
Hi guys,
I’m at a bit of a loss as to do what to do , so I thought I would post here.
I have been selling through Amazon FBA since September of last year, and have done pretty well in terms of sales. My number one priority is the customer, and I think this is reflected in the level of positive reviews that I’ve managed to get - over 200, which I don’t think is too bad.
Most of my competitors are Chinese companies, and a lot of their listings are poorly written, so as soon as I launched I was able to quickly rank and obtain a good market share. However, this has clearly not gone un-noticed. Around 10 days ago, I got two 1-star reviews in a row. Iniitally, I didn’t think anything of it, as I do occasionally get 1 stars. However, the following day, I got another, then the day after that, another, and another, until I had around 8-10 1 star reviews all left on consecutive days.
At this point I was extremely upset as the bad reviews killed my sales pretty much. Two weeks ago I was selling 50-60 units per day, now I am struggling to get past 10. My review rating fell from 4.5 to 4.2 in under a week. I spoke with my supplier, and questioned why the quality had reduced, and they said it hadn’t. So then I started to do some investigating on the reviews…and to my shock, I came to the conclusion that they were fake / paid for by a competitor:
-
All of the reviewers (around 8-10) who left the 1-star reviews have made their accounts private, so you can’t see what other products they have reviewed (all less than 5 products). Whilst this isn’t conclusive, this is very strange. I usually always check what other products my customers have reviewed (to see what’s in trend etc) and it is VERY rare to see a private acccount
-
My product is for women, yet three of the reviewers who said they’d used my product, were from men. Suspicious.
-
A competitor of mine, who has also been doing well recently, has had the EXACT same thing happen. They were on 4.8, now 4.5, and they have had a series of 1-star reviews left from private accounts. They are still getting attacked, whereas my bad reviews seemed to have stopped (For now). I have contacted them, and they said they know who it is, but they don’t have proof, and Amazon won’t listen.
-
Finally, I received an anonymous email to my company email account saying ‘hopefully you have got the message by now. Stop selling this product’. I am unable to trace the origins of this email, but I am convinced it is the competitor, who else would it be?
I have emailed and called Amazon, and despite me literally handing them the evidence on a plate (I’ve given them links to the accounts & reviews, my competitor’s page, and a screenshot of the email) they have done NOTHING. The review abuse team just said they will investigate, but for ‘privacy reasons, they can’t disclose the results’. I’ve emailed Jeff, Managing Director, Seller Performance, and the Review team, and i’ve had NOTHING back.
Has anybody got any advice / has anyone succeeded in having fraudulent reviews removed? I’m absolutely gutted. I put so much into this business, and this competitor / person, has destroyed it. My conversion has gone from 30% to 6%. I’ve been messaging other customers asking for them to leave reviews, but as you are aware, most don’t bother. Because I have so many reviews now, getting back to 4.5 stars from 4.3 is pretty difficult, I think I will need at least 20 5 star reviews in a row. Anyway, I shouldn’t have to do this, because I have been unfairly attacked.

Surely if your supplier wanted to stop you selling this product they would simply stop supplying you

That’s so upsetting to read. I can imagine how upset you are after putting so much work into building your business to be bullied away like this.
What is the product?

That’s astonishingly disgraceful. I am really sorry for you. This is not too dissimilar in practice to all these new branding accusations that are flying out of China, whereby the suppliers independently sell the products wholesale to UK businesses but then use Amazon to stop the UK sellers from actually selling them. These are all massive scandals and should be royally investigated as fraud.
It is seriously disturbing that Amazon allow fake reviews to remain on their website. Actually, in this day and age of fake accounts being deleted from social media, Amazon should step up and take action. They should never allow a review at all unless it is a verified purchase. And they should most definitely not allow a buyer to lie in their seller feedback either. Both are permanently published on Amazon, and as the publisher Amazon is committing libel. They try to get around UK law by stating their business is conducted outside of the UK, but if they publish lies on the UK pages, using UK internet service providers, then that libel happens in the UK and so UK law applies in full.
We all know that Amazon doesn’t care two hoots about sellers, but one day (hopefully soon) the law will come down hard on Amazon and teach them a lesson.

Perhaps you should inform of the ASIN, and then any of us who have bought one on Amazon (or elsewhere as no one checks) can ensure we give a 5 star review if we liked the item
Amazon should do something, but we all know that they won’t!
Most likely bad reviews from a competitor of a similar item, unlikely to be your Supplier, they could just stop you buying it

Sorry to hear that, I completely feel you and I know how frustrating it is with many sellers (Mostly Chinese) cheating their way through the amazon system and misleading customers to gain sales. Many of my competitors have got over 800 reviews on their listings and if scroll through the reviews past the 3rd or 4th page they are all FAKE 5* reviews from FAKE ‘Amazon customer’ profiles which have all got their reviews/info hidden on their profiles.
Their listings aren’t even good with many grammatical and spelling errors all across the listing and THE SAD PART of this all is that they are all ranked on the first page and are getting tons of sales each day.
I have reported this many many many times but amazon aren’t doing anything about it which is really really annoying.

I think the OP meant the cheating-underhanded-scumbag rival seller.
The Amazon review removal system is a joke for honest sellers. The reviews right-to-reply comment “feature” a complete waste of time in its current state.
We’ve had two similar examples, one review with 40+likes! (big clan families these mainlanders !, only ever reviewed one product - ours!). Both written by native speakers (what people will do for a couple of quid/dollars!). Later, received emails, pointing to those reviews saying they could be removed by adding a Chinese social media account. Both reported to Amazon twice, got a short boiler-plate template reply, the second time, indicating it looks like review abuse. We’ll see what happens.

I suggest you check the quality of the next batch from the supplier.
I have met the same situation about one year ago, but it turns out the is the problem of the supplier, they sent a poor quality product, but I did not check because of the previous batch not have any problem.
Now I know I should to check every batch

Ah sorry guys, i meant i’m convinced its the competitor! My supplier is actually amazing and says they also supply this competitor, which adds to the theory that it’s them. I’ll call Amazon again today. I’m not giving up until I get somewhere with this… at the moment i’ve just had boilerplate responses, so i’ll keep going until I get a human.

You give us your asin and you will find your 5 star ratings go up. Nothing to do with us, of course!
