Been away for a while...
So, long story short - I made a good career selling primarily on Amazon for several years but came off around 3 years ago when other marketplaces were really booming for me. Since expanding, I have been trying to restart my Amazon store but keep getting hit with verification (I understand it's needed and that's fine) but the latest one has been almost 2 months now.. I am opening cases every week or so and keep getting told "they're in the last stages" or my case is being transferred and they will contact soon. This never used to happen in my previous years - if we had had restricted access, it would have literally killed us at the time as we lived off our Amazon earnings! Is this the "norm" now that any admin change will trigger a verification and therefore lose selling rights for several weeks/ months at a time?

I believe that the way verification works, each time you send another message on the case, you get pushed back in the queue.
Judging by the forums, 2-3 months is a common time scale for verification, though that may be distorted since people who have it happen more quickly wouldn't have a reason to post about it.
