Staples in FBA Cartons?

I am about to send my first FBA shipment to Amazon but is it even possible to find a 50cm sized carton anywhere in the world without metal staples?

As per Amazons rules for FBA cartons

Boxes must not:

  • be bagged or covered in stretch wrap
  • be covered in packing tape as this prevents them from being able to be recycled
  • contain metal staples or plastic corner protectors

Have I actually got to physically remove staples from 150 cartons then re tape them up?

What happens if I send in cartons with staples?

There are loads of places you can buy boxes that don’t contain staples.
I get a lot of stock through here and very rarely, do I ever see boxes with staples in any more. Even the larger size ones. So not sure why your struggling to find them to be honest.

As to sending them in, you may get away with it, you may not. But once you don’t, they simply won’t accept them again and you will end up with a black mark on your account.

If the problem is that your manufacturer is providing these boxes, then you will simply have to buy elsewhere and repackage. Or ask them if they can do things differently. Most companies these days are environmentally friendly and should take that step.

When we started we bought house removal boxes from Amazon (An FBA seller) - price has probably changed now but it worked out at about £2.50 per box (no staples!) - double walled and very strong - we ship boxes of approx 18 - 22kg in weight each at a time, hence we need strong boxes.
Neil has kindly advised in the past the approx cost of £50-£60 for a pallet - so actually there is very little in it cost wise for us to ship boxes or pallets - but logistically pallets would be a real pain as we do not really have the room to accommodate and/or wrap within our premises - whereas boxes can be moved around easily.
Our last shipment is/was 10 x boxes most being about 60 x 40cm sq with about 3 a bit smaller and this was just under £50 with UPS - so boxes is what were sticking with, and not bothering with pallets.
We now have sourced a more economical supplier for our boxes and buy several hundred at a time.
We regularly have UPS collect anything from 6-14 boxes per collection at least twice a week - so even though our UPS drivers tend to rotate a bit - they all pretty much know what they’re collecting, how heavy they are and how many there are each time they come - so most have already made room in their vans before they pull up. - And I always help lift them into their van every time.
Our initial restock limit was a pain to begin with (1000) but within I think 3-4-5 weeks it began to rise, and more recently has risen steeply and quickly - were at about 27000 I think at the mo.
So - ship what you can up to 1000 units, and then you will have to wait till you sell some to make more room back to the 1000 and so on until your limit increases.
Don’t forget to factor in the approx 2-3 week timeframe from shipping before your products are fully released with in Amz for sale - but the restock limit takes into account in stock as well as in-transit, so will need a bit of juggling in the early days, so maybe 2-5 boxes each shipment etc. as you build up to a higher limit and so ship more in each go etc.
As a foot note - my “other” business regularly has boxes come in/used from China, and none ever have staples in the boxes (I re-use them for FBA shipping in : -) so you must just be unlucky!

  • good luck with it all.

Hi everyone, many thanks for the guidance, I believe we have boxed up, and labelled the cartons correctly and booked the collection in with UPS for today.

The Shipping Queue report states : ‘Shipment Created’ and is booked in for today. However, I’ve had no notification of a time or an acknowledgement from UPS via email or text confirming collectioni or a time.

What is the normal procedure that people have experienced for this situation?

Am I to assume it is all going ahead between 9-5 or?

On a similar note, are products allowed to have staples in? (ie, to hold the packaging in place)
