Used and Return

We have a head accessory product. The FBA returns are quite high. Most likely customers wear for a particular occasion and then return. What is the best way to avoid this?

If it is the case customers are wearing it and returning it then it is not possible to avoid this on FBA. If it is possible to go FBM instead you would probably find that you get significantly fewer returns so it maybe a way forward.

I would check the reasons for your FBA refunds though just to make sure that your assumption is correct, have you ruled out other issues such as it not fitting or breaking

One way to avoid this is to do retail standard packaging.

For example, if you buy something in a shop it should have tamper proof packaging. Similarly if you box or bag your item in tamper proof packaging, then when and if it is returned to Amazon, they may class it as unsellable and return it to you or refund you. Also perhaps put a tag on the product which would need to be cut off - this may deter a return.

It is not easy as so many customers across so many textiles platforms expect to be able to do this. You certainly need to build a healthy percentage return rate into your margin expectations.

Hello @Seller_iSaQ1YZLh9y3p

Thanks for reaching out - dealing with high return rates on occasion-wear products is a challenge many sellers face, and I appreciate @Seller_d8YGbIjNqwFxn and @Seller_hnJy2He6uzeGX for sharing those practical suggestions.

Optimize Your Product Listing

Your detail page is your first line of defense. Make sure your listing clearly communicates what the product is and what it isn't. Use high-quality images from multiple angles showing actual product, include lifestyle photos that demonstrate intended use, and write detailed bullet points about materials and durability. If it's a delicate piece meant for occasional wear, say so clearly.

Check Your Return Reasons

Before assuming customers are wearing and returning, head to your FBA Returns page (Inventory → FBA Inventory → FBA Returns) to review the specific return reasons customers are selecting. This will help you confirm whether it's actually wear-and-return or other issues like fit or quality.

Consider Restocking Fees & Packaging

As @Seller_hnJy2He6uzeGX mentioned, retail-standard tamper-proof packaging with tags that need cutting off can deter returns. If you're selling in the US, CA, or UK, you may also apply restocking fees for items showing signs of use.
