VAT number rejection
It seems ‘sole trader’ marketplace VAT numbers are getting ‘rejected’ by amazon because amazon is trying to match their company names registered in amazon against names appearing in VIES where they show the company name and owner name blended together. Isn’t VIES just a search engine rather than a database and wouldn’t it be better to match the company name against the HMRC database of company names for UK Vat numbers to validate?

You are right in every way. The whole thing is an absolute shambles and is affecting many sole traders.
I finally reluctantly removed my vat number from the system after first being told by the vat dept that all was ok, then told it was rejected and was showing as rejected on seller central.
So I deleted it then added it again but was told that as it was already rejected, I couldn’t add that number.
So now, awaiting the vat appeals team who first said all was ok, to sort it out. I don’t hold much hope for an early resolution.
I hope not too many companies are avoiding buying from us as a vat number is not currently being displayed.

Many sellers are all in the same boat. Me included. I’ve been waiting for a reply for days after providing my certificate and being told everything was ok. We’re all waiting for replies at the moment.

Is there anyone solved the problem after submitting the VAT certificate? Anyone can share their case, please?

Just tried a follow up myself and got…
Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:
vat-number-appeals@amazon.com (vat-number-appeals@amazon.com)
The recipient’s mailbox is full and can’t accept messages now. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly.
I take some comfort then that full mailbox suggests we are all in the same boat playing the waiting game. Next settlement is going to be a bit of a pain for me and others I bet… I normally do a few clicks with A2X and voila… but no… not this time now this has occurred smack bang in the middle of a settlement. This settlement is going to be me, Excel, a can of Coke and a Snickers which will no doubt graduate to a few glasses of Scotch once I get frustrated with it.

Been promised mine would be sorted in 3 days on 3 separate occasions now. Still marked as ‘rejected’ despite that time period having passed.

Having sent them the VAT certificate, again, I was told by email:
“We have validated your VAT number and I have updated our systems and the update should register in your account within the next 3 days”
That email was on 27th March. Now it is 4th April, it’s still showing as rejected. A follow up email asking what is taking so long has not been replied to yet either.

VAT number back as verified, finally, and much later than advertised.
Would have been nice if they’d sent an email to confirm it had finally been sorted, but, meh.

Hi Zeb. I have been putting this one off myself… still a month to go before next return. Thinking I may just do the settlements around the offending period and then it looks as though I will need to download the settlements and upload the old fashioned way. Should be a simple enough with a few pivot tables… just going to take time with eyeballing due to overlap with settlements. Might be a pain managing the returns too as always had to do that outside of A2X due to stock tracking. Setting time aside to do this middle of this month. Got a bottle of Cardhu ready to go!
