Return Requested - Reason ( book ) No Longer Needed

Hi all some advice needed here please. I just sell some old inherited books and I sold one to a buyer on 17 January. I got an email last night saying Amazon had automatically approved a refund request and the reason was No Longer Needed. They can’t do that can they??? The buyer has had it a month and now they want to return it?

What can / should I do as I don’t think they should get a refund after this length of time.

Thanks

As long as it is within the 30 days, the buyer can indeed do that.

They can, and you will need to accept the return request, but once you have received it back you can deduct the cost of the return postage from their refund as ‘No longer needed’ is one of the reasons where the buyer is responsible for return cost.
Once they realise this they may decide to keep it.

Perhaps you could email them saying ‘I think you are confusing me with a lending library’…:upside_down_face:

Seriously, when they realise they are going to have to pay to return it they might just decide to keep it.

Fortunately, this rarely happens with books but it’s annoying when it does…

Welcome to the world of Amazon! abandon hope all ye who enter here!

Not only they are allowed to do that, but you should consider yourself lucky because the following might have happened or may still happen:

  • you might have sent it recorded, it could have been delivered, photo and GPS coordinates taken, and yet, the buyer might have simply said that he hasn’t received it - and you would have to refund;
  • the book might have been delivered one day late and you would have to refund and the buyer would keep the book;
  • three months after purchase buyer may open the case that something is wrong is with the book and the amazon cs will be abusing you to refund the buyer;
  • the buyer may send you the book and it may get lost on the way, you will have to refund him and seek compensation with evri. you won’t be able to, because evri will be claiming that amazon bought the postage - not you, and amazon will be sending you to evri
  • buyer may send you a brick instead of book and he will still be refunded in full;
  • you will come to this forum to seek advise and you will be informed to kneel down because you were given privilege to sell on amazon so shut your mouth and be grateful, or go away

Deducting the return postage costs is what you can do no longer needed items. With regards to the cost of the shipping this should be included in the retail price of your all your products.

Oh yes, the old ‘lending library’ phenomenon…

Amazon has now implemented the ‘refund on first scan’ policy for most (though not all) orders. It is probable that when the buyer uses the return label provided by Amazon and they drop the book off with Evri or the post office and the label gets a scan, Amazon will automatically refund them from your funds at that point. As the return reason was ‘no longer needed’ Amazon should automatically deduct the cost of the return label from the refund, and as the order was received more than 14 days ago, they should also withold the original postage charge the buyer paid at point of purchase (if you charged separately for shipping the order).

When you get the parcel back, check via the ‘Returns and refunds’ widget on your seller homepage whether the order has already been refunded or not. If not, you can refund from there and make adjustments to the refund as needed. It’s best to refund via the widget, rather than the orders screen as you are presented with more options.

If it falls under the heading buyer responsibility then seller can deduct the postage costs from the refund, however if you use the buy shipping the process could be different subject to the value that’s how I understand it. Safe-T claim if the buyer has selected the wrong reason for return or has not returned the order in accordance with the returns policy. We have had several select the wrong reason for return for example saying its defective when we informed them we will take video footage of the return they decided not to return the order. What surprises me the most is they usually come in small groups.

In addition to the above I would be keen to know what Amazon actually does when a customer has failed to return the order in accordance with the returns policy?

No longer required is a simple reason for return of “any item any condition” bought on Amazon, accept OR leave

Bought the book, read it, don’t need it anymore -> “No longer required”

Bought an expensive clothing, wore for the evening party, don’t need it anymore -> “No longer required”

and the list goes on :wink:

A Safe-T claim in majority of cases results in reimbursement of fraction of price!
