Is it possible to change dimensions and keep the same ASIN?

Hello,

I am thinking about changing my product’s packaging from a bottle to a box. The dimensions will change from 45 mm x 45 x 86 to 123 mm x 80 x 36. The design will change too, product essentials will remain the same.

I found some useful info on this thread.

According to the Product Detail Page Rules, you must not use an existing listing for a new version of a product. Changes to a product’s packaging colour, design or material do not require creating a new ASIN. Only when the product being sold is either materially different or changed in brand value is it necessary to create a new ASIN. This includes changes in colour, SIZE, material, features and product name.

As I understand, size equals dimensions. This means I should create a new ASIN. But the most interesting part is the answers from SS:

As per Product Detail Page Rules that you have mentioned, changing the packaging will not be considered as a new version since all the information of the product would still be the same. You can wait until the units in our Fulfilment Centers are sold out or create a removal order for the remaining units before you send in the product with it’s new packaging and also upload new images of the new packaging.

Please be informed that you can change the product packing from bottle to a box.In this case was till all the units get sold once all the units sold please change the information in images and detail page and try send the units.

The SS misinformed me many times. The best answers come from the internal teams like brand registry, but it seems the case needs to go through basic seller support first.

Does anyone have any experience in changing the product’s packaging? Has anyone managed to change the packaging and keep same ASIN?

SS are absolutely unable to understand nuance or, basically, anything which cant be replied to without using a standard templated response. ‘Support’ is probably pushing it under the trades description act (if that still exists!)

I think, however much of a pain it would be, as you say design will also change (which would have gone over their head), a new ASIN is probably the only way to go. Firstly there is the GS1 requirement, and secondly there’s trying to change an existing listing, as even a slight difference could cause you problems and remotely possibly accusations of inaccurate/fake etc product sent, negative feedbacks, returns and worst case scenario, account health flags. Although you can change the details within an existing ASIN, old details remain and occasionally raise up the Amazon bot ranking and are then used for the product page which the buyer sees.

Sorry - just spotted you’ve added another response - all they are seeing is the word ‘dimensions’ in their robotic reading of your query - but they have no knowledge if the change is more/less than x%, they wouldn’t understand GS1 rules as they aren’t Amazon templated … and so on & so forth. All they look for is an easy reply. Yes, I could change a packaging box by a very small amount, and yes, that would be fine, but they would not look further into a query than ‘woohoo, here’s a reply, any reply, that one will do’!

Ps anger focused towards SS just in case this reads aggressively

You may want to check GS1 rules first - sorry, I can’t remember their threshold for the requirement of a new barcode but I think it’s only around 10% and that includes packaging, which means they class it as a different product and therefore would require a new ASIN on Amazon as it’ll have a new UPC/EAN

3 SS associates confirmed that change in dimensions does not require the creation of a new ASIN…
