GTIN / Brand issue - can't create a listing

Hi - I’m trying to add my first product onto Amazon as a private label seller, using FBA. I have a limited company and have created a brand within that. I’ve applied for a trademark for the brand name, but haven’t got it as yet.

So when creating a product listing, it won’t let me use the brand name, as it’s not trademarked yet or in Amazon’s brand registry. I didn’t think you had to have either of these things to list your brand - has this changed recently? I picked ‘generic’ instead, and used my limited company name as the manufacturer. The GTIN/EAN I used was bought from Gs1.org under my limited company name, but Amazon won’t accept it and says ‘Please note that brand name being used is “Generic”. While listing products that are generic/non-branded, seller should not use GTIN that do not belong to the product.’

I really don’t understand what to do here - can anyone help me out? Am I going to have to wait until my brand is trademarked and then register it with Amazon’s brand registry before I can create a listing? Trademarks can take months to go through as I understand it, so I’m keen to find a quicker workaround, if possible.

Thanks in advance!

basically they are saying that on GS1 database, it is registered to your company name, whereas on amazon , you are using the name generic

couple of options - wait until you get your trademark and brand registry through or apply for Brand Approval - tbh though i’m not 100% sure how that would affect your brand registry application of the same name

Thanks for your help everyone. Brand Registry won’t accept me just yet as I don’t have a TM number, just an application number, but will get this done as soon as a number arrives from IPO.

I guess it’s a good thing that Amazon are being strict and checking brands in this way, just wish they were a little clearer in their comms, it’s all a bit Amazon-tech speak for a newbie!

I wonder if you guys could help with a very similar issue… the difference being my product is unbranded and when I hit the category and type Generic as the brand in GTIN Exemption application it gives an error that this brand name must have an EAN ?
