Sterling silver jewellery tarnishing quickly in presentation box

Hi. I was just wondering how other jewellery sellers got round the problem of jewellery tarnishing when its in its presentation box. I bought some cheap and cheerful boxes to put small silver studs and chains into but they tarnished really quickly. I think it is something to do with chemicals used in the making of the sponge part. Has anyone else had this problem and how have you sorted it? Thanks

It’s the other metal that causes the tarnishing, mainly the copper content, best way to prevent the issue is in a sealed bag (air removed) otherwise storing even in a box that has air inside is unlikely to prevent the problem.

Ps: I don’t sell jewellery by the way, just know a little about metals.

You can buy anti tarnish tabs which are like little pieces of paper that you put in the box with the jewellery - that may help a little

The glue used in manufacturing some displays or boxes will cause silver to tarnish. Where are you sourcing your boxes from? Use a reputable British manufacturer where function is the main design parameter and you will not have this problem, use a Chinese manufacturer where the main design parameter is cost and you will have all sorts of problems.

The bad news is that this adhesive tarnish is harder to remove, same as tarnish caused by perfume, deodorant etc. where the chemical actually reacts with the silver, rather than just the formation of an oxide layer.

The way we get round it in our jewellery store is to be constantly polishing the silver… we use town talk products in store, as well as selling them on Ebay and here. In our experience these are the best…

Of course it will also depend on the quality of jewellery you are selling -

There are basically 3 qualities:

Lowest - Pandora
Low - H Samuel/Ernest Jones (Ratners by another name)
Standard - Most independent jewellers.

The lower the quality the harder it is to maintain a good finish

I always do a final clean and polish of all jewellery before it’s posted out to the customer. I don’t store items and then post them out without going over them first with a final clean and polish just before posting them - I want them going out immaculate and I think the only way to manage that is to do this.

Then it’s up to them to keep up my good work after that

Indeed, that’s on of the reasons I don’t think I’ll be likely to ever consider FBA, I like to ensure I’m in full control of quality.
