Product ID and SKU

Hi,

Can I have a bit of information regarding Product ID and SKU? I have been reading in forums and articles and my understanding is that Product ID I should purchase from GS1 and the SKU will be generated by Amazon. Is that correct and if so, when do they generate it? Also if I am looking to get my product shipped from China, do I have to print out the barcode (Product ID) and provide it to my supplier before they ship the batch? Do I need a different barcode for each colour?
I am sorry i have so many questions, but I want to make sure I do the right thing.

Thank you very much for your help!
Elena

The SKU will be generated by Amazon IF you do not choose it yourself.
Many sellers make their own SKu’s to enable them to better keep track of their stock, and can, for example, utilise the SKU to help locate where in their storage facility [whether that be spare bedroom or warehouse] the item is located by allocating a coded SKU.

Yes

Create variation

1. Go to Create a new product
2. Select the category that matches the product you want to sell
3. On the ‘Vital info’ tab, complete the required fields (marked with an asterisk *)
4. In the next tab of Variations, select a theme from the ‘Variation Theme’ drop-down list
5. Select the appropriate variation theme for your product Note: The ‘Variation Theme’ drop-down list and Variations tab will appear only if you are selling in a product category that supports variations. Once you have created a product with a selected variation theme, you will not be able to change the variation theme
6. Enter values for the variation theme. For example, if the variation theme is colour, enter values such as red, blue, white, etc
7. Click on ‘Add Variation’. A ‘Variations Matrix’ appears, allowing you to add more detail for each variation combination

_ * A product identifier (EAN or UPC) is required for each variation_
_ * While not required, a seller SKU will be automatically generated for you if you do not add one_
_ * Provide all offer details for each product such as condition, price and quantity_
_ * To delete variations, select the box corresponding to the listing and click on ‘Delete Selection’_

8. Click ‘Continue’ and add the required information on the remaining tabs (images, product description, keywords and other product attributes). This information will appear in all variations of your product.

First of all, each product (including every individual variation) will require a valid product identifier such as EAN, UPC, JAN or ISBN code, unless you were granted an exemption.

If the product doesn’t have a barcode, you will either need to purchase one from GS1 or request an exemption for the particular category.

The barcode can be printed or placed on the product or/and it’s packaging by your supplier/ manufacturer.

Once you create a listing, you will have the option to set your own SKU (recommended) or have it automatically generated by Amazon.

If you decide to ship the inventory into FBA, you will have the option to use the manufacturer’s barcodes to track it or print the FNSKU labels, which will be different to the original SKUs.
