Is there a way of cancelling pending orders that are over four>five days old?

This has been mentioned before, sometimes competitors do this to stop competition on the listing. You could put a maximum order quantity on the listing which may help however if it is common for people to buy multiples of the item it could also stop genuine sales.
As far as I am aware there is no way to cancel a pending order. You could try raising a case with Seller Central if you know the previous order numbers and ask if they can see if it is the same buyer but I have never done this so I am not sure if they will do that.

Simply putting items in the basket won’t reserve stock - do you mean purchasing?

If the transaction is pending, then surely you don’t know who the buyer is?

In a word, No. You can only wait until they clear, either when any payment problem is resolved or when they are automatically cancelled, which can take 21 days

Adding it to the basket will not cause your inventory to reduce
If you are seeing all your inventory in order pending satus, then someone has agreed to purchase them and gone through with payment, albeit with possibly an expired credit card or a card which has no funds so will not get authorised
Amazon then gives the buyer a week or two in the hope they will use a valid method of payment by updating their card payment details.
Some sellers use this to reserve other sellers stock so they can sell their own, once Amazon catch on though it leads to suspension or at least one would hope it does

Stock is not removed from a listing until the order is confirmed. Someone adding your stock to their basket would not deplete or freeze your stock.

Well there’s one way to find out for sure, the next time this happens to me I’ll work out the stock situation and if I see for sure I’ll post back

Autosport_Models_Col only you know how many of an item usually sells to each buyer. Just edit your listing with a maximum order figure that you think is appropiate. This will prevent anyone adding more than that figure to their basket. Sorted. Good luck.

This has happened to me many times on an Asin where a Chinese seller kept buying and cancelling the item. It removed stock from my inventory. They were buying multiple quantity so I went into edit product and changed quantity per order to 1. Then added extra quantity to compensate for the 20 or 30 orders cancelled (you need to make sure you keep stock of what actually sells to stop over selling).
