SIOC Shipping Products with no Packaging
Has anyone else come across this SIOC (Ship in Own Container)? We were shocked to discover that Amazon had been dispatching one of our products with no packaging, just slapping a shipping label on the product box. Amazon never informed us of their decision to start doing this and refuse to stop doing it. This is a quality product and looks really bad for the customer to receive it unpackaged. Does anyone know when this SIOC was started?

Ages sellers have had labels directly applied to stuff like Lego Boxes, you need to add packaging yourself maybe something like a mailing bag to avoid this problem.

I’m having another SIOC problem. We sell products for the crossdressing and transgender communities and we require discrete shipping. However, Amazon has been shipping our products in the original prackaging. This is a problem because the Amazon warehouse label is visible on the exterior of the box and it clearly identifies the contents (ie “Crossdressing hip pads”). Not only is Amazon disclosing the contents of the order, but they are also disclosing private information about the customer’s gender identity or crossdressing habits.
I believe this is a clear violation of Amazon’s own Privacy Policy. Amazon is required to “maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards in connection with the collection, storage, and disclosure of personal customer information.”
I have made multiple requests for Amazon to change the SIOC settings but they have refused each time. It appears that their internal policies only consider the structural integrity of our packaging, and not the proper handling of personal information. As a temporary fix, I am die cutting large holes in our packaging to render it unsuitable for shipping. This will force Amazon to box these items.
Unfortunately, we already have a lot of inventory in FBA that we cannot sell because Amazon refuses to package them in a manner that protects the recipient’s private information. It will be very costly to return these items to the USA. I would very much like Amazon to cover this cost since they appear to be in breach of the privacy policy.
Has anyone anyone successfully convinced Amazon to change the SIOC settings?
