Amazon charged me $888 customs on SEND shipment — expected $20!

Hi everyone

I used Amazon SEND with UPS to ship a small parcel from the UK to the US (paw balm). The expected customs charge was around $20, but Amazon suddenly charged me $898 for “customs/brokerage” with no invoice or explanation.Has anyone else had Amazon charge such a high amount for SEND international shipments? How did you get this resolved?

Thanks!

We have now confirmed the issue. Amazon’s customs broker mistakenly cleared our UK made products as China origin, which triggered the 9903.85.68 duty at 200 percent. Because of this mistake, we were charged almost 2000 USD across three UPS invoices.Since these shipments were sent through the Amazon UPS Partnered Carrier Program, UPS told us they cannot help and that only Amazon can correct the customs entry. We have already sent everything to Seller Support and requested escalation. But not help, Amazon Jeeps saying we have to deal with UPS.

A simple warning to other sellers: be very careful when using the Partnered Carrier Program for shipments from the UK to the US. A customs error like this can cost you a lot, and you are not in control of the customs clearance process. Only Amazon Seller Support can fix it.

Forum moderators, could you please please please help connect us with the Partnered Carrier Team? This mistake has cost us nearly 2000 USD and we urgently need Amazon’s assistance.Hope this helps others avoid similar problems.

Hi, not yet. We have spent days and hours on the phone, in chat, and by email with both UPS and Amazon. UPS keeps saying it’s Amazon’s responsibility, and Amazon keeps saying it’s UPS’s responsibility. We were becoming completely mad.We have now lost $2,000 spread over three shipments—Amazon deducted this amount directly from our account. We finally got in touch with a more competent support representative by chat, and they asked us to fill out a form proving that we do not import aluminium from Russia (we sell dog grooming products!) and that we are not manufacturing in China. All our commercial invoices clearly state in large print that our products are 100% made in the UK.To make it short: UPS and Amazon handled the customs clearance and declared our 200 UK-made dog grooming products as Russian aluminium coming from China. It has now been 10 days waiting for their “specialist team” to find a solution. Exhausting.

Okay - so below is a summary of my conversation with Amazon - next step is contact UPS - will update further after that . . .

The document details a conversation regarding an overcharge on import duties for shipments sent to the US FBA from the UK.

Import Duty Dispute

The seller reports being charged 200% in import duties instead of the expected 10% for shipment ID FBA190XKNSH7.

The seller has not received the necessary Entry Summary (CBP Form 7501) from their customs broker, which is crucial for disputing the charges.

Common causes for duty overcharges include incorrect HTS codes and wrong customs values.

Next Steps

The seller is advised to contact their customs broker to obtain the Entry Summary and other relevant documentation, such as commercial invoices and duty calculations.

It is emphasized that the seller, as the Importer of Record, has the right to access all customs documentation.

The seller should verify their contact information with the customs broker to ensure future notifications are received.

Having just done some further reseach and looking back at previous emails I am rather suspecious of UPS - as an example on one shipment I had an email from UPS at 2.53 a.m saying that the shipment had been delayed - requesting a copy of the commercial invoice at 3.03a.m another email saying they had received the required info and the shipment was cleared! (nothing sent from me) - Were they trying to clear a backlog of parcels by making up the required info? Also charging the 200% duty to cover themselve?

Good news! However, Amazon is now asking us to wait up to 8 months before letting us know whether the escalation was successful. I can’t believe this — we've essentially just lost $2,000…
