Confused about gtin numbers and gs1 codes

Hi frnds,

I am new to amazon selling and is really confused about these all sorts of codes.I understand ASIN is the number for a specific product on amazon.

But what about these gs1 or upc codes?I understand they are unique for a product. But do I need to get one, if I am selling a product matching to an existing listing.Or can I use the same code of the existing product, if the existing product and mine are same.

And if I need UPC code for the products I am selling, will my product manufacturer in China give it to me. Or do I need to get the UPC codes myself for products imported from China.

Can anyone help me with these.

Before you think about anything to do with UPC, EAN or GS1 I would strongly recommend you read up on the basics of selling on Amazon at Seller University

GS1 is where you would need to purchase barcodes from if your items do not have a barcode.
When listing to sell you must use the barcode that is on the item if it has one, or you can apply for GTIN exemption.
ASIN is Amazon’s OWN identification number for ievery item in their catalogue (Amazon Standard Identification Number).
As said above - work your way through Seller University before even ordering goods from China -and hopefully you have requested a sample before placing a large order to check it is as you expect, especially quality - you do not want to be lumbered with a load of stuff you cannot sell.

If your product doesn’t have a barcode on it and you have matched it just by the description then the listing has almost certainly been branded by whoever listed it. You need to check before you add your offering to any listing that it is listed as ‘generic’, anything else and you stand to have your account suspended.
