Used Books - Personal Name Inside
Hi,
I have a second-hand book in very good condition however a previous owner has written their name inside the cover. Does anyone know if this is okay to resell this? I have scored out the name. Surely this happens quite often. Does anyone know for sure that this is okay to resell?

Hi,
Yes, I would sell it as “good”, preferring to understate rather than over… Here are the condition guidelines for each category (books being the first one listed)

Thank you anglozone. Good point about understating. I should have said it would have been classed as very good condition according to conditions other than the name but had planned to mark it as good since it had a note. Thanks for letting me know that this is okay. Worrying too much for my first shipment!

I also understate generally (the fear of getting a refund and/or negative feedback), even if I feel it’ll affect how quickly the book will sell. And if there is a name or mark in the book, I usually put ‘Good’ as the condition (even if the condition is Very Good or Like New) and write a short paragraph describing the true condition of the book in the description (though I wonder sometimes if buyers actually read the description).
Don’t be put off selling the book

If the previous owner was also the author of the book, it could add a lot of value.
If not, it downgrades the condition to ‘very good’ at best, though it’s safer to choose ‘good’, as noted above.

Personally, I would not have scored out the name, however, condition, as per other posters, should be good with a note regarding the previous owner’s inscription

As Carol says, I would probably have not scored it out, but depends on what it is like.
I often have good success actually erasing them with an ink rubber, or sometimes will put a plain white label over it. There are other tricks too !
The important thing is to describe accurately.
