How to get GTIN Exemption For Generic Item I Make Myself
I make customised products and gifts which have no barcode, how could I list these with GTIN exemption under the “Generic” brand? When I try apply for GTIN Exemption and enter the word Generic in the brand name box (As instructed on the same page) it gives me this error “The brand you have provided requires a barcode (GTIN/UPC/EAN/ISBN) to list on Amazon. If you do not have a barcode for the product, you will find it on the packaging and/or back cover of your item.”
This used to work a couple years back haven listed anything new since then so not sure what changed.

Would you not be better with a Handmade account? Unless the items are made from (for example) bought in materials like beads to make jewellery and just have a basic customisation. Also gives you a Professional account and you can apply for GTIN exemption for other categories, as long as your main listings are in Handmade. And for the time being, no monthly fee.
Otherwise, you have to apply to Amazon for GTIN exemption - https://sellercentral.amazon.co.uk/help/hub/reference/200426310
Or, you buy barcodes. GS1 I believe.

Yes i tried that, however when i add the word generic in the text field is gives me this error:
The brand you have provided requires a barcode (GTIN/UPC/EAN/ISBN) to list on Amazon. If you do not have a barcode for the product, you will find it on the packaging and/or back cover of your item.

What category you listing in, some won’t allow Generic. Book won’t,allow Generic, Baby Products won’t either. Home does, Jewellery does,

Got ya, same I couldn’t list some personalised signs I sell, like for house numbers and stuff. I decided not to bother listing those due to the process to get approval for exemption. I think generally most categories like the main ones and sub ones you can list in but a few select ones you can’t. I can understand perhaps electrical and baby but not signs. Pet I can kinda understand too if there is any health related reasons behind why amazon won’t allow generic.

Hi we make our own products too but are in Hand Made and don’t need barcodes for Amazon. But we need them for our website and Google Shopping ads. We have a GS1 account, I would explore this option, it’s quite easy to set up and I believe Amazon recognises GS1. Good Luck

I also make stuff to order, just come up with a brand name, it doesn’t need to be registered trademark just to identify your stuff on Amazon. Apply for a gtin extion with that brand, you’ll have to send them a picture of one of Ur items with the name affixed to the product or packaging. Then they approve the branding and give you the gtin exemption so when you list just put your brand name in the box and you won’t need barcodes. Hope this helps.

This has been an issue where generic isn’t being accepted for personalised items. I have contacted SS and quoted Amazon’s own policy stating that custom should use generic as brand name after obtaining exemption. SS did not really have can answer to this, just that they are sure the technical team will look in to it
