Bulk Image Upload Extremely Time Consuming

I have a large catalogue with lots of variations (Colour, Size, etc.) and have found that uploading images, whether through the manual uploader or the bulk (re-naming files) takes an extra ordinary amount of time. I am wondering if any one else is experiencing the same thing and if anyone has figured out a work around/short cut?
