Does a parcel still get scanned when it cannot be delivrered?

Now with Royal Mail, for fully tracked parcels, they get several scans as it travels through network and I know if a delivery is attempted but not successful it gets noted in the tracking information.

However, is this the same for the CRL24/48 service? This service only scans the once at point of delivery. So if delivery is attempted but unsuccessful, does the tracking info still show this?

Reason for asking is a parcel I sent on 4th was still not delivered yesterday do customer asked me to refund, which I did. Then today I happened to re-track and it now shows delivered. I am wandering if delivery was attempted and customer given a card to collect. They then waited the obligatory 3 days after estimated delivery date to query and ask for refund (14th) then asked Royal Mail to deliver today 15th.

When I have ever checked tracking for a CRL parcel it only ever shows whether delivered or not. I dont think I have ever seen a 'delivery attempted' message. Does anyone know for sure?

On the odd occasion I have checked I have seen CRL48 items showing as attempted delivery when a delivery is attempted.

I think this then allows the customer to rebook the delivery via the RM site as well.

Whether it always happens though I can't tell you. My guess is probably not.

It depends on whether they take it back to the depot and register it as having been brought back. In theory, they should update to show delivery was attempted, but some posties tend to keep hold of them in the van for the next day, or put them straight into tomorrow's stuff at the depot, so it doesn't get flagged as being back.

Sometimes they scan it for deliver it, then take it back in the way I outlined, so it looks delivered on the tracking but they haven't actually yet

So basically it is entirely possible.

Delivery is attempted but tracking does not show this, customer gets a card saying delivery attempted, they wait for a couple days then ask for a refund, once refund made goes and collects the item.
