Amazon is asking for HMRC documents to verify account (UTR) but I do HMRC online, so have no letters
Recently I have been asked to change from individual to business (Sole Proprietor) on Amazon.
I have included my UTR, but now they are asking for documents.
‘’-- 1 of the following documents issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) within the last year:
- Class 2 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) Bill
- Online VAT Certificate
- Self-Assessment notice to complete a tax return
- Letter confirming your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number
- Self Assessment Statement
- Short Tax Return.
We can also accept the following documents issued by HMRC:
- Certificate of Registration for Value Added Tax (VAT)
- ‘Welcome to Self-Assessment’ letter confirming your UTR number
- Letter confirming your VAT number, following a VAT1 application’’
HOWEVER, I am ‘paperless’ on HMRC so everything is via email. I have a UTR document but from 2017, so not applicable. And a UTR welcome letter but in my maiden surname with the old address, so a no too.
I have download a Tax Calculation summer 2019, Tax return 2019, and Calculations 2019, but none of those have been accepted. They all contain UTR, name, address, etc.
I checked my emails and all they include is a generic ‘Remember to do your Taxes’ etc.
I have tried HMRC but was told that this is not their priority due to the current Covid-19 issue.
Was anyone else able to get a document to successfully verify on Amazon but from their online HMRC account?

HMRC will provide this for you on request, free of charge.

They’ll usually accept your letter from HMRC advising you to submit a tax return. If this is an e-version save it as a pdf before sending to Amazon. As a belt and braces approach I’d also contact HMRC as retro has advised for a letter advising of your self employment status and UTR as you can never predict exactly how Amazon will respond.

Hi RS.
You can get all those listed documents if you go through the Government Gateway.
Once in you just go to the appropriate links for your last tax year and you can download them as pdfs. Make sure you get the HMRC logo on the letterhead. I done it. Took 4 months for Amazon to do their bit.

I have recently gone through this process - absolutely nothing that can be used on the online portal.
I requested a letter with my UTR via Live Chat, which came within 5 days.
Alternatively, you could do it by phone and wait in a queue, but Live Chat was far more time efficient for me to do in the background.

If you phone Hmrc they will send you it in the post but if like me do it all online you can print most off in pdf such as your last year’s tax NIC etc. so that’s probably easiest option

When I did mine, you couldn’t use anything that was downloaded it has to be requested specifically from HMRC and they post it out. Takes a bit more time and is frustrating but is the only thing Amazon will accept.

I had this very same issue a few weeks back there, very frustrating. Once I filled out my tax return for the year just ending I forwarded them the tax return, which they didn’t accept for some reason. This was the full tax return issued by HMRC which I imagine is the one you have tried to use. A few days after you submit your return for the tax year just ended, go back into your account and a summary of the tax return will be issued. I printed this summary, scanned it in and amazon accepted this as proof. I hope this helps.
