New to Amazon seller... ASIN issue

Can someone please help me figure out how the ASINs work? I’m having products made in China and have been trying to list them for 2 hours but whatever code I type in for the ASIN does not work. Someone seems to have the same product on Amazon and when I use that ASIN I cannot list any variations which are different from the current listing.

What am I missing?

The ASIN is generated by amazon, do you mean the EAN? Does your item have a barcode?

You may not be able to create new listings for some particular brands.

I had this problem with the ASIN, I had to apply to amazon that I didn’t have it and they accepted it so now I can list with variations without having to put it in

Please get the terminology right if you want help with an issue.

ASIN = Amazon Standard Identification Number and each one is unique for each product that is assigned an ASIN by Amazon’s system.

They are created by Amazon when a new product is added to the catalogue. They cannot be created by sellers.

They are normally tied to specific EANs, ISBNs etc, though the system is not perfect and duplicates can arise, normally as a result of sellers bending the rules…

My product is a generic clothing product from China and has no barcode, no EAN, not ISBN etc etc. How do I go about listing the products?

A category can have thousands off, am i supposed to scroll through all the product to see if it is available on Amazon? You get over 2.4m results when you search the generic product…

Also, if another seller is selling the same product how does Amazon determine which sellers product is being purchased?

I have now tried to list another product which I believe is not on Amazon and after selected the Variations Tab and listing Small, Medium, Large and extra large I am again asked for a product code which I do not have and I have to select a product ID type.

What am i missing here? What am i doing wrong?

Have you applied for a gtin exemption?

The GTIN exemption does not work unless I am doing it wrong.I have to select the category which is clothing and then i type Generic into the 2nd box, after a click a get a lovely red X and that is it.

How am i suppost to list my products on Amazon? This seems like more effort than it is probably worth

My error message is " The brand you have provided requires a barcode (GTIN/UPC/EAN/ISBN) to list on Amazon"

I assume it is a glitch and I have to wait it out or can i report it somewhere?
