Fake Reviews Under Fake Names

Hi

I have noticed in the last months there has been an increases of fake reviews. If the customer has a genuine complaint why don’t they customer let the seller know before writing a negative review under a fake name?

how do you know it’s fake? does it not have next to the name verified purchase?
also customer name - user name can be anything - customer or reviewers don’t have to use their real name.

I am sorry but just because a buyer did not contact you to offer you the option of resolving their issue prior to leaving a Product Review for the item purchased doesn’t necessarily have to indicate that the review is fake.

Also, most reviewers have a different name to post reviews than their actual one, matching the order details.

I’m not convinced on this “fake review” idea. if as you say, you have sold thousands theres a good chance you have quite a few reviews so even if lets say 10 bad reviews came in its not really going to affect 100 positive feedbacks too much yet they are out of pocket for 10 items, where’s the real motivation for them? unless it’s a competitor? but again, 10 items in costs to do what? boost you sales velocity? theres no real motivation here for any customer or competitor to do the things you are claiming which makes it really quite unlikely that your allegations are true.

If numerous sellers all use the same barcode number then the reviews are all displayed together.

Then you have a selection of buyers to buy that item from. The person reviewing could have bought from someone else.

If you sold 1000’s one ‘fake review’ should not impact. besides you have opportunity to reply. Just go with 'please accept our apology if the item was not packed to an expected standard, however please be assured all our products should be packed… list ‘bomb proof procedure’. A customer complaint/review is an opportunity to promote your company in a positive fashion. GDPR wise no details should be made freely available that allows a person to be directly identified. (something like that)

This is just how things are. People are most likely to leave a reveiw only when something is wrong, than to give a glowing review.

Many people also do not want to put their name on their reveiw profile for privacy. I personally never leave negs as I don’t beleive in using them as a weapon but even so, I still do not use my real name on my reviewer profile.

The point is that all products are guaranteed negs some times because it’s just the way things work, no matter how good the product is. Many buyers will not use their real name in a reviewer profile too for simple privacy. Unfortunately this is just something you have to accept with regards to reveiws as you will always eventually get some negs. The longer and wider the interval between negs, the luckier you are/the better your product is.

Look at any product with a significant number of reviews say 100+ the absolute best will be displayed as 4.5* but you will never find a high number of reveiws with all 5* because people will neg and that’s just how it is.

I’ve had reviews I’m sure were fake. Telling what I believed were obvious lies about my product. Upon emailing the customer. Plaintively if also rather firmly accusing them of being unfair. I discovered they were real people.
Just obviously real people who were having a rather bad day!

(my suggestion is to pull of the heart strings ie. we are a poor struggling family business. we are SO SORRY! etc etc)

People are excitable and they also exaggerate. Luckily this also applies to the good reviews. I’m not complaining when somebody says my product is life changing even when I know it’s not. So I have to roll with the punches and suck it up when people say I’ve ruined their lives with a bad product even when I know that is a lie too.

Just try and get more reviews any way you can.

good luck

by trashing their own product and hence reducing their own turnover ? yes - great move.

Mmm something similar happened to me recently. A product which I have sold several hundred and has always received 4 or 5 star reviews with the exception of one 3 star review five years ago recently got a 1 star review with very negative comments. It was a ‘verified’ review but I couldn’t find a record of a sale to the reviewer. A bit of further research showed that on the same day that the reviewer left my review (so to speak) he/she also left a further 76 YES 76! reviews for other products. Some good reviews but a lot of negatives …… Which rather begs the question who in their right minds sits and writes 77 reviews in one day? Scrolling down the list of purchases is also a mind boggler i.e. Christmas Tree decorations in July? A mattress that was too smelly but not sent back (really!) and so on …… Takes all sorts I suppose ….

My understanding is that fake negative reviews against competitors are now more favourable than fake positive reviews for own brands as negative reviews cannot be traced back to a seller. There are companies that specialise in providing such services for a fee. It goes much further than Amazon, all sites where a customer may be influenced by reviews are now subject to this underhanded practice.
