Amazon FBA - New Seller - Am I Doing It Right?

Good afternoon all,

I am a new seller on Amazon FBA, therefore, I hope the responses I receive are gentle!

I’m just curious as to whether I am completing the whole process correctly, to ensure it is within Amazon guidelines and I am not doing it incorrectly.

  1. I find a product from a wholesaler / retailer.
  2. I begin listing the product on Amazon.
  3. I sometimes notice I cannot list the product against an existing item (I am adding a product not sold on Amazon) therefore, I select the product type I am wishing to sell.
  4. I complete all the necessary fields.
  5. I purchase a GTIN from GS1 and input this in the Product ID field.
  6. I purchase the items I found in point 1.
  7. I select “Send/Replenish Inventory”
  8. I complete the necessary fields.
  9. I send the labels / barcodes to the supplier.
  10. I track the item being delivered to the depot.
  11. The item is listed as “In Stock” and I await sales.

This is a very brief overview based on the videos I have watched on the Sellers University.

I welcome all your comments and advice (as long as they are gentle).

Furthermore, I now understand that I must be VAT registered regardless of being under the advised threshold of £85,000.00, therefore, I am waiting for my UTR number to become VAT registered, but in the meantime I thought I would gather as much advice as possible.

Thanks all,

Regards

You should only purchase products for resale from a reputable wholesaler. The reason I say reputable is because Amazon may require an invoice of at least 10 units of the same item, at any time.

I would stay away from buying from retailers to sell on amazon, even though it may be tempting or the go to idea from gurus online.

All products from wholesalers should have barcodes and I would not suggest adding a product that is not able to list on the platform. Buying barcodes from GS1 I would think carefully as there could be a reason why the product is not able to get listed on amazon. Also some wholesalers/brands do not approve of products being listed.

There’s no need for you to be VAT registered then, just registered with HMRC and Amazon as a business seller so once you receive your UTR Amazon will need it to change your account to business.

You also dont need an EORI for FBA only.

Just to add, Amazon dont often like Alibaba invoices so be very careful using that as your first sales. Also wouldnt recommend getting them to label and ship direct until you know a supplier well as you’ve no idea what quality they will send and it could be very costly.

Also, you’d need to make sure they have all the relevant safety certificates etc depending on your product and remember if you buy something generic there are likely to be 100s of seller already on Amazon so think why they will buy yours - just make sure you do plenty of research before committing to buying anything
