Return request not returned

I hope someone can help me.
I had a return requested for an item, which the buyer claims was faulty however I know this is incorrect as I tested it myself before shipping, anyway I authorized the return for them and asked them to send it back via tracked so I can keep a tab on it as it’s an expensive item. Yet quite a few days after I have not received this item, after contacting the customer they said they have sent it. Yet when asked now 4 times they still refuse to give a tracking number from the 1st attempt and them by attempt 4 they are now claiming the receipt got ripped up, I have tried to explain I will only refund once I have received this item due to the value of it. (Please bear in mind the customer has been quite suspicious from day 1 with general behavior) and now waiting another week with no reply from the customer, Amazon have contacted me saying the customer has gone to them saying they want their refund. I have replied to amazon saying about trying to get tracking info and still not receiving this item, but I wanted to ask you good people is there anything else I can do? I do not want to refund a £500+ item to someone I believe has not sent me this back and to basically give them free money too.

Do not refund any money
If the buyer hasn’t returned it you don’t refund
Was the item exempted from auto refunds or did they not even officially open a return ?

Plain and simple, no return = no refund.
I had a customer open an AtoZ claim which was approved automatically. I appealed and stated that there is no proof of the return and the refund is outside of Amazon’s own policies. Overnight, this was changed from seller funded, to Amazon funded.
