Royal Mail 48 - Does Anyone Know The Answer?
Hello.
I was discussing this yesterday on the forums and some people believe that Royal Mail 48/24 services pricing goes by the “average weight”, which I did believe at first because when I printed my end of day manifest/form it did seem to average the weight on it under the same line for RM 48 (it was something exact like 101g for 50 odd items).
For example Royal Mail 48 for large letters under 100g should be £1.16 each total, then over 100g (100g-250g) should be £1.60 total. However what worries me now is that I think it would always average ALL our under 100g letters at the 100g-250g bracket (£1.60), so we’d be overpaying on all the light items if this is true… (most of the stuff we send is very close to 100g and when it goes over it goes over by a lot).
I spoke to the Royal Mail sales team about this and they told me it only does that for Tracked Royal Mail 48/24 (not standard). But I don’t fully believe this yet - because of how the orders appeared on our manifest aka Amazon end of day form yesterday, does anyone know the truth?

They have informed me that CRL is based on an average daily weight. This is done separately for the products 24 & 48 so there is an average for each service. This is inclusive of Large Letter and Parcels.
I’m sorry I didn’t have this information on the phone, I was under the assumption of something else. I’m now coached in the right way!"

We believe this is the case.
Since most of our items are between 100g-250g and some under 100g, we do 2 manifests at the end of the day, one for under 100g items and one for above.

Just send yourself a couple of 5g bubble envelopes out to your own home address or something, with nothing in it to bring the average weight down.
Cost: £1.16 x 2. = £2.32
Difference
Under 100g (50 items) = £58
Over 100g (50 items) = £80
£58 + £2.32 (Additional two items = £60.32
Saving you £19.68 every day!

We are setup for CRL but currently use BPL as we are not VAT registered.
We are about to link the Account with Amazon due to impending change on 31st March.
Can we continue to use BPL via C&D
Should we select 1st Class or RM24 for VTR purposes
Should we also select ‘Mark orders as dispatched’
I appreciate this is probably another thread but all the experts are here.

I havent read all of the comments but why dont you sort your mail into groups and manifest them how they work out best. I used to do this. If I had a lot of low weight items and a few larger weight items that would take the average over 100g I would manifest them separately.
Eg 30 items at 80g = 2.4kg
2 items at 600g = 1.2kg
Total average weight is 112.5g
32 x 1.30 is £41.60
If I manifest them separately:
30 x £0.94 = £28.20
2 x £2.00 = £4.00
Total £32.20
So I would save quite a bit doing that sometimes.

Hi again guys, sorry to ask this question again. I thought i’d give Royal Mail a call depsite what you guys said, to confirm that this is 100% true regarding the “average weight” working out of the price for Royal Mail 48/24 (standard, not tracked). Their sales team rang me back again today and I linked them this forum post. They still believed that it is not done by average weight and the pricing is done individually depending on their weight (e.g. up to 100g £1.16 and over 100g up to 250g is £1.60). They said it only applies for Tracked 48 / 24 again… however after I linked them this post and explained what you guys believed - it threw in a bit of uncertainty so they’re going to ring me back again soon.
So my question is are you guys 100% sure that’s how it works? have you double checked your OBA invoices from Royal Mail? and does the same apply for both Click & Drop and Buy Shipping through Amazon too? (with a linked/active RM account).

It’s just strange that 2 people from the Royal Mail sales team said it’s not true, that’s why i’m here again. They will read this again i’m sure and try to get to the bottom of it and then let me know.
Yes we do the exact weight for each item on the labels, then we were planning on letting the system determine the average weight of everything combined on the manifest/invoice. But we also want to be careful to not have too many light items going out under the -250g bracket when they are under 100g. That’s why we now make a note of each parcel/envelope’s weight to try and save a bit of money. But obviously if what Royal Mail have told me is true, then I would be wasting my time doing this, so that’s why I need to be certain.

The system will average weight the items and bill you depending on which bracket they fall in
If RM have changed their policy on this and only told 2 sales reps and noone else, and more importantly, not updated their own systems, then that’s their problem

Yes they specifically think that RM 48 / 24 are billed on an individual basis depending on weight (their exact words x2 in a row), so I am looking forward to hearing back from them and checking our invoice. Based on what you guys have said, I believe you - that it is done by a grand total average weight on the invoice (per manifest) and not on an individual basis - and will carry on as we are. Thanks for your replies. I’ll let you know if they ring me back saying otherwise.

Thanks for this, that’s how mine came out too when I did the manifest from C&D. I am doing buy shipping now, the manifest is very similar but doesn’t say the average weight on it, should be the same though.

if you have access to your OBA account, you should be able to sign in after you have done the end of day report on amazon and search for it to check
just change the search to ‘any’ and last week and then click on the transaction number

AVERAGE WEIGHT - This is how we do it. When we’re ready to manifest (which you need to do before it auto manifests once a day) we go to our orders page and select the days at the top that the orders go with… i.e monday to tusday or on a weekend saturday to monday. We copy and paste the data on this page… (you can reduce the fields at the top with the settings button) so you need up with it saying order x … weight 99g … and I heightlight them all then click copy… I then go to an empty spreadsheet and click the top right hand corner box and paste… you then get a list of all your orders that are ready for manifest in spreadsheet. I then click and empty box and type sum=( and then I click in the first box at the top to show a weight… then I type :3000 (or however many orders you have… so for example sum=(f3:f3000) and press enter… You then need to do control and f button and then enter “g” and use the replace all function and leave it blank so it removes the grams part… you will then get a total in the box of the entire weight of your bag… i.e 8020 would be 8020 grams or 8.02kg … then look how many shipments are in the manifest… i. you’re showing 81 orders… so you can go ahead and manifest as your average weight is under 99g per item… if your weight is over… for example it was 80 orders but your weight was 8020g… You can select a certain batch and manifest one item on it’s own if it’s putting the weight average over… Royal Mail don’t like you doing lots of little bags but never had any problems…

Based on what you guys have said, I believe you - that it is done by a grand total average weight on the invoice (per manifest) and not on an individual basis - and will carry on as we are. Thanks for this, that’s how mine came out too when I did the manifest from C&D. I am doing buy shipping now, the manifest is very similar but doesn’t say the average weight on it, should be the same though.

if you have access to your OBA account, you should be able to sign in after you have done the end of day report on amazon and search for it to check
just change the search to ‘any’ and last week and then click on the transaction number

" I have spoken with our products team, who have thankfully got back quite quickly!
They have informed me that CRL is based on an average daily weight. This is done separately for the products 24 & 48 so there is an average for each service. This is inclusive of Large Letter and Parcels.
I’m sorry I didn’t have this information on the phone, I was under the assumption of something else. I’m now coached in the right way!"

It is worrying though how multiple agents have told you that CRL is not averaged.

AVERAGE WEIGHT - This is how we do it. When we’re ready to manifest (which you need to do before it auto manifests once a day) we go to our orders page and select the days at the top that the orders go with… i.e monday to tusday or on a weekend saturday to monday. We copy and paste the data on this page… (you can reduce the fields at the top with the settings button) so you need up with it saying order x … weight 99g … and I heightlight them all then click copy… I then go to an empty spreadsheet and click the top right hand corner box and paste… you then get a list of all your orders that are ready for manifest in spreadsheet. I then click and empty box and type sum=( and then I click in the first box at the top to show a weight… then I type :3000 (or however many orders you have… so for example sum=(f3:f3000) and press enter… You then need to do control and f button and then enter “g” and use the replace all function and leave it blank so it removes the grams part… you will then get a total in the box of the entire weight of your bag… i.e 8020 would be 8020 grams or 8.02kg … then look how many shipments are in the manifest… i. you’re showing 81 orders… so you can go ahead and manifest as your average weight is under 99g per item… if your weight is over… for example it was 80 orders but your weight was 8020g… You can select a certain batch and manifest one item on it’s own if it’s putting the weight average over… Royal Mail don’t like you doing lots of little bags but never had any problems…
