I don’t think they have to be. It’s up to you.
Most of my boxes are just regular cardboard boxes with no double walls.

Double offers better protection afaik both are accepted.

Not at all, we usually re-use the boxes Amazon sends to us and they are super thin. As long as the contents are protected your fine.
