Return reason: unauthorized purchase
Hi all
Got a return request with the reason unauthorized purchase.
Do I treat it like any other return?
Do I need to pay for return delivery cost?

Usually in cases like this, a family member has used the account to purchase something without permission. Your item is not defective and you are not at fault so the buyer pays the return postage cost. You then refund the purchase price only, not any postage cost, providing the item is returned in the condition you sent it. Good luck

I wasn’t sure because ‘unauthorised’ to me sounds like ‘skulldugerous’, ie somebody has used your payment method to buy something without your knowledge. Not being any fault of the seller, I wasn’t sure how this worked. As you say though, a seller could simply describe it as a change of mind.

Yes the original outgoing cost (price + postage) has to be refunded in full once item is returned.
However, whether the buyer also have to pay return costs is a bit of a grey area. Its not always the buyers account being used by a family member that causes this issue.
For example, I have had the same problem myself on my personal buying account. I bought an item and Amazon informed me the order did not go through as my credit card had expired. No problem, I updated my credit card and re-ordered. However, Amazon had not cancelled the first order but had it on hold. So when I updated my credit card they then charged it a day later and put the first order through as well.
I therefore had the item delivered twice.
I did not want to penalise the seller by selecting a reason for return such as ‘defective’ and neither did I want to use ‘change of mind’ as I did not believe I should be responsible for return postage. I therefore selected ‘unauthorised purchase’ as, as far as I was concerned, it was an unauthorised charge on my card.
So who, in this example, should the pay the return postage?
