Removing Foxing

Hi All,

We have a book that needs the edges cleaned in order to remove foxing, Its only on the fore edge, the other two are OK.

Has anyone got any ideas…

Many thanks

How can you remove foxing without cutting the page?

If it’s just the loose fibres themselves, I’d probably try a medium-coarse paintbrush.

Do you mean foxing of the edge or of the page face itself?

Fine sandpaper/glasspaper might do it if it’s just on the surface.
You have to be prepared to lose some of the page edges though…:open_mouth:

I use a sandpaper block. good for refreshing worn page edges. they are available in several grades.

I sometime use all the methods already mentioned but It’s hard to remove it completely. Although sanding can do an excellent job where the pages are evenly discoloured rather than foxed

The other way is just to mention it in your description of the book. You cam always use appropriate adjectives, eg light moderate, or marked. I use the word “spotting” rather than foxing, as I suspect most non antiquarian book sellers don’t know what foxing is.
