Parent ASIN pictures

I have set up some Parent/Child ASINs with a colour variant. I have uploaded colour specific pictures at Child ASIN level and also some general ones at Parent level as I expected these would show in searches, but from what I can see one of the colour variant pictures is being returned in search results. Is that normal? How can I get a Parent ASIN pic to show in search results? Thanks in advance
