Shipping Box Overweight: 23kg is now the new minimum?

Hi,

We’ve been selling on Amazon FBA for 2 years now, and the maximum shipping box weight when we started was always 30kg. We’ve used UPS every time, and never had any issues.

Now though it seems Amazon have reduced the max weight for a shipping box to 23kg. This is a problem for us, as we have two primary products, and we pack 8 of them in a box, meaning they add up to 24kg and 27kg respectively.

Why have Amazon reduced the max weight?

To make this even harder to stomach, the details in the warning reveal that our last box weighed exactly 23.77kg. Our products mainly consist of dense powders, so there isn’t really anything we can do to make them lighter.

8 of them fit perfectly in a square shipping box, so this really poses a problem for us in how we send boxes to Amazon’s fulfilment centres now.

We’ve never used pallet shipping - is this the route we should go down now then?

Did you ship to BHX4? This FC is a sorting centre & max weight for the conveyors is 22.5Kg anything bigger goes to manual sorting & takes longer. This has been in force since last year.

Most probably. We’ve been shipping regular boxes to most distribution centres. I guess they’ve not been stringent with their checks, or we’ve just not really noticed longer booking in times.

Either way I’ve spent the last couple of hours this morning looking into pallet shipping and I guess that’s the logical solution for us.

Maybe down to manual handling weight and health and safety?

Just had this notice, and my inventory was sent to BHX4 too.

I sent 2 pallets (as I have done about a dozen times), 28 boxes in all of mixed inventory 17 different SKUs

I admit that 25 of my boxes were were actually over 23kg, as I always keep under 30kg, and apply “HEAVY” labels to any box over 15kg.

Only 3 were flagged as overweight, seemingly at random. Suffice it to say it will cost more to send inventory next time as a few kilos will be cardboard instead of product. Seller fulfilled prime is going to be looked at this week.

What will they think of next?

I have had a similar alert today for boxes which are 16kg but complaining the dimensions are over 63.5cm, has this changed also? The item itself is 70cm long and they come from the manufacturer 4 a box. I have been shipping them in like this for 2-3 years no problems until today.
