Why is Amazon search so bad?
Why is it when you search for a specific item on Amazon more than 80% of the results are totally irrelavent to the item you are searching for. As a buyer it must make you just go and look elsewhere…

Because amazon think they know what your looking for.

I have noticed the same when you search for a particular brand and it produces results which show others. Also filtering the price low and high does not produce the correct results.

The search on Ebay is light years ahead of Amazon. When you search for a specific item on Ebay its the other way round about 90% is relevant to what you are looking for.
I try to search for some items that I am selling and most of the time they never show up so no wonder sales are so low on Amazon. As if I need to buy an air fryer everyday )

Search is a nightmare!
I dunno how many times I’ve nearly ended up with A7 envelopes instead of A5 ones, definitely easier to find things on Ebay

The problems with the database are now so bad that I’m pretty sure Amazon don’t make any attempts to fix it anymore.

Its intentional so like you said, people get fed up and go elsewhere. If you know what you want that’s not the sort of customer they’re looking for

I think some of it is to do with advertising, if your product can’t be found then at some point the only viable option would be for you to advertise. If Amazon can get sellers to pay for advertising then it’s money they obtain without having to do a lot of work (as software is already in place).

I always thought it was just too broad, or it looked for each word rather than a group - for instance looking up 1000 A4 board back envelopes on ebay will return all the a4 envelopes that are available to purchase in lumps of 1000. The same search on Amazon will return anything with 1000 in the title or keywords, and anything with a4, and board, and backed, and envelopes, so I end up with pages and pages and pages of crap I don’t want.
At least on Ebay I can make selections down the left to further minimise my choices - stock in UK only, get it fast etc

I think it’s a combination of a lot of things.
-
An attempt at some sort of algorithm to put the products that AZ thinks you want in front of you rather than simple search term relevancy
-
Trying to ensure that sellers need to advertise
-
Manipulation of product pages (how many Amazon product titles and bullet points actually read like they were written for human consumption rather than robotic SEO)
-
Sheer volume of products. (Some random searches; Dog Collar +50,000 results, Size 9 Mens Blue Trainers, +20,000 results)
