Amazon automatically refunding customers before the return even reaches us?
We have just noticed that Amazon are now automatically refunding any customer that opens a return request, before the item is even sent back to us! We sell in the clothing category and have had a number of returns that are soiled, unable to be resold and found that amazon had already processed the full refund! As well as us paying for the damn thing to be sent back to us!
We have noticed an increase in the number of returns recently as customers must have picked up on the fact that they can use us as ‘free hire’. So damaging to a small business trying to cling on in this climate - this may be the final nail in the coffin for us with regards to selling on Amazon!

As @The_Little_Shop states- refund at first scan was implemented on 24th October 2022 for almost all FBM orders where a return request is opened.
Obviously as they are clothing you will be charged for the return labels anyway, but you can claim back using the Safe-T Process if the item returned to you is not as you sent it to the customer. You would need to provide photo evidence if items are arriving damaged or soiled.

You need to file a safe-T claim for an order that has been refunded. Click the link above and you can open a claim.

As others have said this is now Amazon policy
Clothing is free returns anyway. Amazon issues returns label to customer. As soon as label is scanned Amazon issues refund.

As said above regarding the Safe-T Claims. Make sure when a return comes back you’re ready to take photos of the condition as evidence in case you need to file a Safe-T Claim.
Also make sure to report the Buyer for abuse of the Amazon Returns Policy through your account health page.
