Hi guys,
I am new on Amazon FBA - I have recently placed an order with a Chinese supplier on Alibaba to sell on Amazon (private label). Moments ago, I was creating a new listing on Amazon as I’m selling the products as my own brand and I came across the product ID. My question is - do I need to purchase a barcode from GS1 in order to continue creating the listing? Or is there a cheaper way? And how will I be eligible for brand registry?
Thanks in advance!
Thomas
If the items do not have barcodes then you will need to purchase them - but ONLY from GS1 which is the only legitimate and authorised source that Amazon accept.
I don’t think you will get brand registry if you are purchasing from Alibaba (very iffy source).
Search the help section for extensive information on Brand Registry requirements, nobody here can tell you if you’ll be eligible.
You or the Brand owner will require a registered Trademark to register for Brand Registry, a Brand owner can give permission for an agent to register their brand on Amazon on their behalf but still requires a registered trade mark to apply.
To enroll a brand, you will need to provide the following information:
Your brand name that has an active registered trademark.
The associated government-registered trademark number.
A list of product categories (e.g., apparel, sporting goods, electronics) in which your brand should be listed.
A list of countries where your brand’s products are manufactured and distributed.
The trademark for your brand must be in the form of a text-based mark or an image-based mark with words, letters, or numbers. Depending on where your trademark is registered, eligible trademarks can have different classifications based on their issuing trademark office.
Looks like I will have to check out GS1. Does Amazon require sellers to have the barcode printed on the labels or not once I have registered with GS1? Since I will have to stick the Amazon barcodes on after anyway?
Thanks
If the product is new and you are creating a new listing you will require an EAN / GTIN barcode to set the product up, Amazon will only accept GS1 barcodes for unbranded products, all major brand products have specific number sequance EAN/GTIN bar codes that are checked during the item creation process to see if they match the manufacturer sequence.
If the product you are selling is already listed on Amazon, i.e. you are listing against an existing ASIN, the bar code labels are created during the creation of the FBA shipment (Product FNSKU Labels)
You can go comingled but this is not without risk as you are effectively mixing your stock with other Sellers with the assumption being each seller is selling the indentical genuine same product
Comingled Inventory as BarryM states is when you use the manufacturer retail EAN barcode that must excatly match he amazon listing EAN bar code
Eligibility
Not all inventory is eligible for tracking with the manufacturer barcode. To be eligible, products must, at a minimum:
Be in new condition
Have a single scannable barcode that corresponds to a single ASIN in the Amazon catalogue
Not be expiry-dated
Not be consumable or topical products such as skin creams, shampoos, or make-up.
Important: If the manufacturer barcode maps to more than one ASIN, an Amazon barcode is required.
In addition, Amazon may determine, at its sole discretion, that a product is otherwise not eligible. Amazon will identify the products that are not eligible and require an Amazon barcode when you create your offer. Amazon will, at its sole discretion, determine which products meet the eligibility requirements for using manufacturer barcodes.
