How long does the customer have to return a product, after I have authorized the return ?

Many decide not to return if their reason for returning is one where they are responsible for the return postage cost.
Whatever you do, do not refund until you have the item back.

Wow, that’s a lot of time! What is the logic of leaving the product with the customer for so long? What’s the problem with getting organized and returning within a week?
And two more questions: Do they have 45 days to mark the product as “shipped” or until the product arrives back?
And also - is it possible to get a link to Amazon’s policy on this matter please?
