We use a system that has defaults set to process and ship our orders. 10 weeks ago, Royal Mail suspended obtaining signatures, we assumed they would stop charging us the signature surcharge. They haven’t, they tell me they assumed customers would amend their systems.
I’m pretty sure it’s unlawful for Royal Mail to continue charging for a service they do not currently provide.
Thought I’d let others know as I guess more sellers may have been charged.

Have you taken the matter up with Royal Mail?
I would have thought if postal worker is signing covid-19 on the handheld terminal on behalf of the customer this would be a considered as proof the item was delivered?.
Amazon prime deliveries do not require a signature but tracked.
They do provide it…posties do it themselves on your behalf. The item still shows as being delivered and signed for. All the couriers do the same. We get quite a lot through DPD and once the item has been delivered, a text message comes through to say it has been signed for by the courier, on behalf of the customer. Don’t you think you’re “nit-picking” a bit here? What if RM just said, “sorry, we’re not going to deliver anything at all during Covid-19 cos it’s too risky to our staff”. We’d all be bosched then, wouldn’t we? I would recommend a bit less gripe and a bit more gratitude !
The do not provide a signature service at the moment, a fact that is confirmed by Royal Mail Head Office and evidenced by the tracking information we receive. They do however continue to charge us a 30p surcharge.
No nit picking or griping!! Simply want to pay for the actual service provided.
Actually you are paying for insurance so if the item goes missing you are covered to the value of the item, which is why if your item is over £50 the only options open to you (via RM) are Special Delivery or Tracked, the latter having to be scanned through a sorting or delivery office.
Incidentally you might be happy to handle a PDA that has been handled by any number of people across the day but not many are and as a postie I certainly am not and I imagine that both the WHO and the NHS would be somewhat less than impressed that RM and other couriers would be so irresponsible.
We have already read on a forum some sellers have experienced customers using the claiming they have not received their order just because handheld terminal did not contain their signature. Hermes and DPD take photograph of the door also. Postal workers do ask to confirm the name upon delivery.
When Royal Mail agree they don’t provide a signature and have now offered a refund, they must be wrong as Retro seems to know better! Bizarre.
I think you should be worried about other things. They are risking their lives trying to deliver our items to customers, they are really busy and short staffed, I’m thankful they are still delivering and have been during the lockdown and have done so without any problems
Correct me if I’m wrong but Amazon are still accepting signed for as a delivery confirmation if this is your gripe.
I last week successfully defended an AtoZ using this service even though there was no signature from the recipient, so to speak.
Its not RMs fault you didn’t update your system because items were being signed for on behalf of the recipient which is a method you agree is acceptable according to the terms of service for the method offered. If it was me rather than RM I would refund the difference and cancel your contract then I could recoup the losses incurred on future purchases which wouldn’t include the discount you receive.
Parcel2go stopped taking payments for signatures but if you take out basic insurance you will most likely get the driver signing it covid. Purchasing a label directly with myhermes, they were still taking payments for signatures but with only thee driver signing it. Just an FYI to compare, not much else I can add as I only use Royal Mail for letters and purchase that through seller central. I also use it for Channel islands, and those far flung places in the UK. Oddly, I have still been paying for the signature on seller central without giving it a second thought.
