Sending by Royal Mail 2nd - is tracking necessary?
The website requires a tracking ID even though they offer a drop down menu choice of Royal Mail 2nd class. Is this an error or are they demanding that even 2nd class postage is tracked?
I tried to chat with customer support and made little progress. I know people who have bought items on Amazon which have arrived using RM 2nd untracked. Using tracked would be prohibitively expensive for customers on low cost items.
I’d appreciate any feedback.

No, tracking isn’t necessary. How do you buy your RM postage?

No you do not have to send items via a tracked method, and not worth it for lower value items, say under £20 value as RM will cover up to that for standard 1st or 2nd class.
When confirming shipment via the dropdown then do NOT just choose 1st or 2nd class (these became invalid over a year ago), you must choose stamps/franking option for it to be validated.
If you use Amazon Buy Shipping then shipment is confirmed automatically when you purchase the label.

The reason is because 1st Class and 2nd Class Parcels have the delivery confirmation service, and Amazon incorrectly believed when setting up VTR that all RM 1st Class and 2nd Class did. The official guidance is to mark any 1st/2nd Class Large Letters or Letters as Stamps/Franking when confirming shipment and this will exempt them.
If buying postage through Amazon directly (whether with a linked RM account or without) all RM postage will be treated as either automatically valid or automatically exempt.
