Sole Trader Documentation
Hi Guys, I would like to ask you about VAT Exemption for the Amazon fees as I have been charged. I have sent to amazon the UTR letter from HMRC but they said that it is no sufficient. Do you know what other document I have to have that proof I am trading as a sole trader.
They are asking for the below documentation, Also I do not have any tax return yet as I have started selling on Amazon in November 2021.
- Certificate of Incorporation: with legal name and date
OR - Self Assessment issued by HMRC which clearly outlines you as a Sole Trader and the dates from which you were registered as one.
( Be aware we cannot accept an UTR Letter)
OR - Tax Return for the refund periods outlining your name and sole trader income
Thank you in advance

You would be charged VAT on the fees - all non-VAT registered sellers are. For what reason do you think you may be exempt?
Edit - there was a “strange” interaction a while back which meant Amazon stopped charging VAT, for some sellers, but i think that stopped with Brexit.

If you are not VAT registered then you will pay VAT on your Amazon fees - it is a service, just like you pay VAT on your utility bills, fuel etc.
You cannot claim exemption from VAT if you are not VAT registered.
Did you sign up for an Amazon BUSINESS seller account, and supplied Amazon with your UTR as part of your account verification ?
