Unchristian return request

OK, so I sold a Bible to an ordained priest on 21st Jan. On 30th. Jan he messages to say:

“Some part of the book is bleached and is pale and so unusable in the bible part of the book, what should I do ? I am unsatisfied with the quality of this item as some pages are so pale and there are places that are simple bleached so what can I do with this so expensive item with missing part…”

I replied that he should request a return and I would refund him when the book came back. I heard nothing, so I emailed him again, saying the same thing. Still heard nothing. Life proceeds…

Today I get a message saying:

“I have bough this item and as I did not even open it until Easter as I bought as an Easter Gift I realised that there is a page missing and torn apart and I am so upset as it was a gift for my loved one and I spent a lot on this…”

It is out of policy, so I have denied the return. But I am struggling with the idea of a professional religious trying to scam me. I just hope he has mixed up my book with another he bought from someone else. I guess I’ll know when the inevitable A-Z arrives…

Just because someone is a follower of a religion, it doesn’t make them any better than anyone else. You can deal with bad buyers anywhere.

According to my own experience, Amazon will often insist that you accept a return if the buyer contacted you within the returns period to report a defect and then opens an A-Z claim months later.

But definitely tell him that the order is no longer eligible to be returned.

I know, I know. It just wrankles more than it should, that’s all…

I have denied the return because 104 days have elapsed. We’ll see what happens…

Thanks for your swift response.

We once bought the stock of a retiring bookdealer who largely sold Christian literature (we are not Christians ourselves, but committed Christians do seem to read a lot of books and the trade in Christian books is surprisingly brisk). He said that he found that people who bought religious books were his “most difficult customers”. I can’t say we found this to be the case. We sold a tremendous number of his books.

It doesn’t sound to me like he is deliberately trying to scam you, more that he has become confused about the matter.

Your buyer may have purchased other books from various sellers and has contacted you in error, or is simply on the scam looking for a refund without returning the book?

Best to first message the buyer confirming the title of the book (bible) they purchased confirming it’s condition when it left you following inspection when listed and packed, then suggest they may have contacted the wrong seller, it may flush out if it’s a genuine mistake, or on the scam, in which case advise you will refund on return, provided the book in the same condition as sent (state condition).

When you receive your return request it should say Out of Policy therefore you do not have to refund or accept the return.

He has now messaged to say that he got mixed up,and that the first Jan. 30th message was for someone else. But he still wants to return this book. I have denied the return request. Is there any way I can re-open this order and now authorise a return?
