VAT Number Issues

Hello sellers, after much struggle i have been issued with a VAT number.

Since the last 6 months amazon had directly been remitting the VAT amount owed by me to the authorities on the account of market place facilitator collection.

Now that i have been issued with a VAT number should i register the number in the AMAZON portal or should I let it be and my accountant can automatically claim the VAT.

My understanding is that Amazon remain responsible for remitting the VAT direct to HMRC.

If you are using a UK based accountant who specialises in Amazon sellers they would be the person to ask.

Are you a UK established business or NETP?

If UK established, then Amazon should NOT be removing any marketplace facilitator VAT from your UK sales - only on your international sales.

You will be responsible for collecting the VAT on your UK sales and doing a quarterly VAT return where you pay HMRC the difference between your output VAT (sales) and input VAT (goods purchased, Amazon fees, etc). On your international sales Amazon will deduct marketplace facilitator tax and you have nothing else to do - technically there is no VAT due to UK HMRC on these sales as they are an export. The VAT Amazon collects goes to the tax authority of whichever country you are sending to.

If you are NETP then the rules are different and I cant answer - but I dont think there is any VAT to claim from HMRC for Amazon sales.

Getting a VAT number (or, correctly I suppose, VAT Registration) is not a struggle.

Perhaps you have an accountant who could tell you precisely what you need to do. Free advice is brilliant, but in matters of VAT and TAX, I'd pay the money for a professional.

No denigration of the people who have replied. Perhaps they are HRMC in disguise of course☺
