Is it possible to determine the source of a star rating (without review) for a product ?

No. As there is no reference to orders anyway on reviews and in the case of star ratings, you don't even see a user name (that could potentially help) you haven't got a chance.

You can try and track it down by the "voice of the customer"
Sometimes the customer will return the item or open a return request.
Had a new listing once with a 1 star review right at the beginning. Looked in the voice of the customer and was able to locate the customer what said that they received an empty package (yes we are getting punished for thing that we dont do anything wrong - it was an FBA order).
