Buyer says I have to pay him back because I had not paid approp. postage

Hi All

Advise please.

Just received this message from a buyer

“On delivery of your package I received an invoice from Royal Mail, this informed me that the seller(you) had not paid the appropriate postage for the package and I was liable to pay pay £12.25 for the postage and a fee, (fee = £8.00) Please advise me on how I may redeem my money for your error. What proof do you require?”

The item was a DVD boxset (weight 400g) which I sent 2nd class via RM Click and Drop. Total postage cost £2.72. I did pay the correct postage.

I know he is lying. I have a OBA with RM and if there was a postage error they would charge my account.

Also RM would only charge £1 fee plus the additional cost from the underweight postage. He also slapped on the £8 which will only occur from customs. As the delivery was to Wales the custom fee would not be there.

Help please.

Ask him to send you the invoice so you can take the matter further
(Whether it is to be discussed with Royal Mail or Amazon then that is up to you)

The Royal Mail will be able to confirm the charge/invoice (if it is real), you need to contact the delivery office for that area as they do keep records. Also i would request an image of the invoice from the customer so that you can investigate further.

Assuming that you can substantiate that he is lying make a copy of all correspondence and report him to the Police for criminal deception.

If you are using click and drop this would not happen, the price paid is not shown on the package like normal stamps, and if there was a false declaration with a business account then Royal Mail come to you directly, we had a problem last year where someone entered incorrect packaging sizes for some of our products, these all got delivered and Royal Mail took it up with us directly, not with the customer. The service fee is only 1.00 also even when this does occur, so you obviously have a fraudulent buyer. We have had similar claims from customers stating the item was overweight, and that they had to pay a surcharge, but our account is set that we can send up to 20kg, so clearly customers are using this as an attempt to extort money, we have always resisted these fraudulent claims, and never had any comeback yet.

I would screen shot from click n drop your order with Royal Mail confirming the weight of the item, and postage paid. Also if you can send proof of weight of the item if its in your inventory as 400g in the item specifics. Send this to the buyer in your response keeping it polite and informative . If there was any case opened you can refer SS to this information as your proof.

Royal mail would never send a charge for pre paid ‘postage paid on account’ mail to the customer, it would be billed to you if they ever did charge anything.

in the old days of DMO ive made mistakes on weights and never had any charges. Royal Mail do not check these unless your red X’d . Red X’d means they take a small sample of your mail to check once every three months. Do you have a business account manager with Royal Mail. You would ask them to look at the QR barcode and double check.

I have had messages in the past where item was supplied by a different seller so it is possible that message could have been meant for a different seller. I would double check first what item the buyer is claiming the excess charge for.

I had one like this a few months ago. I replied asking them if they were sure they had the right seller because I have a business account with Royal Mail which means my shipping labels show the class of postage but never the amount, and that it would therefore be impossible for such a charge to be levied on one of my parcels. I never received a reply…go figure

Ask them for pic of invoice and label. Then you can take up with RM account manager if need to.

If they said already paid, they should still have the card.

There’s the big tell: RM don’t deliver it, they hold it at the DO and send a payment request before releasing the goods.

As Littlebagsoflove also received the same message it would appear to me to be a new scam doing the rounds.
