Royal Mail Tracked

Hi Guys,

I generally print all my Royal Mail postage through Amazon, through " Buy Shipping ". This offers standard 1st and 2nd Class, Signed For and Special Delivery for letters and parcels.

Out of my local 10 post offices, only 2 are open, both are operating reduced hours.

Therefore, it is virtually impossible to drop off a Signed For letter or parcel ( let alone a Special ) and get a scan at the Post Office and I have taken to dropping them into post boxes and hoping for the best. When the Signed For is delivered, there is a record of it, but for the ones delayed, it just shows Item Has Shipped. I know Signed For should go to a Post Office, but at the moment it is simply impossible - and anyway, as anyone familar knows, it goes in the same postbag as standard 1st 2nd and recieves no extra treatment, except a signature on delivery.

On the standard Royal Mail website

https://parcel.royalmail.com/orders/quick-delivery/

They offer 1st and 2nd Class, Signed For and Special Delivery for letters and parcels.

But at the top of the page there is a " Beta Service "

https://send.royalmail.com/

This is offering " Tracked " 24 and 48

I understand that like Special Delivery, this service gets a few scans through the system, unlike Signed For.

Technically, do I also have to take these to a Post Office.

Or can I drop into a Post Box. Will they get picked up in the sorting office and start being scanned at various points in the system.

At least it is something to point to to customers to say it is in the system somewhere …

Anybody with any knowledge or experience ?

Thank You guys !

Is there not a sorting office that you drop off at instead?

Strictly speaking, you can’t drop off anything tracked etc in a post box. People do, but you won’t benefit from full tracking etc. It will all depend on when it is actually collected, and I have noticed, that some post boxes are not getting collected from regularly at the moment.
You of course always have the option to stop using the service.
But if this is for SFP, then you are really taking a chance.

Get in touch with the post offices that are open and find out what time roughly their afternoon collection is.

Go to that PO and wait for the RM collection person and find out where he takes the bags to and the best time to catch the lorry that collects from that place.

You can then take you bags there, this is what we do if we are running late and can’t make the collection at our local PO.

The collection points works well past the PO collection times so you should be able to hand over your sacks without to much hassle.

Where in the UK are you?

I live in a very Rural area and ALL my Local ( 10 to 15 mile radius ) Post Offices are open, albeit they are closing at 4pm

I have an OBA, and I’m sure my tracked 24 and 48 have to be parcels, has this changed to large letter?

Not sure how relevant this is but I did a short stint as a Christmas Casual at a sorting office a while back. We were mainly sorting standard 1st and 2nd class, Tracked were sorted in a separate area. The occasional Tracked parcel would turn up mixed in with all the 1st and 2nd class. Any we found were handed over to the people sorting out Tracked and then got a scan. Any that we didn’t notice, and I’m sure there were plenty, will have been thrown in with all the 1st and 2nd class and sent to the local Delivery Office.

I assume these few Tracked items were parcels that entered the system in an unusual way, perhaps as suggested in this thread? The very occasional Special Delivery also turned up in this way though not many.

For our Royal Mail parcels we have them picked up from us. We send everything under over a tenner signed for and anything overseas as Track and Signed. All signed for and normal mail goes in a grey bag and is taken to a sorting office, there isn’t any record of the items until they are either delivered or attempted delivery. The track and signed is in a green bag which is treated as specials, these are scanned at the sorting office. If you can get in touch with your local sorting office and arrange to drop your mail off there it will be taken in but your signed for will still be no registered. If any customers ask why the signed for code isn’t showing anything I just explain the above and I get a satisfied customer.

You can only get prices using the OBA log in as I mentioned above. You can also get a RM rep to email the prices to you.
