Negative feedback.
I listed a book as acceptable. Condition - used, very clean but edges tanned and fading on spine. Hardcover no dustjacket, ex university library. The book did not please the buyer and she asked to return the book and for me to give a refund and pay for the postage. Amazon said I was not liable to pay for the postage. I told the buyer I would give a refund when I received the book. This didn`t please her, so I gave her a refund, and suggested that she did not read `my condition note`. I also asked her to be kind enough to remove the feedback. However I then gave her a refund and a few days later I received the book. At this stage I couldn`t communicate any further through amazon, so I wrote to her and sent a cheque for £5 to cover postage. She sent me an email, which would be best not published here, but she has no intention of deleting the feedback.
I would appreciate advice from other sellers. I have been selling books for over 20 years and my rating has been 100% un till now.

Me? I'd try to get the feedback removed given its a product review (though I know amazon tend to keep feedback if it refers to damage) and then if it isn't removed, leave a factual, polite response.
I'd also have a read of the Amazon Returns process, as I can't work out why you have sent a cheque.
How are you setup for returns? The standard is customer opens a return request, amazon provide a prepaid return label (charged to you) and a refund at first scan takes place, where, if the customer was liable for the return postage, then the cost of the label would be deducted from the refund.
I apprecite you are stung having received negative feedback - but it happens to everyone (especially on amazon where customers don't read condition notes). Frankly, if you have 5 star feedback for 20 years - thats something to be happy about, I wouldn't get upset about 1 negative that will soon be forgotten about

Short answer is just don't sweat it. It happens to the best of us and you have now learned.
The odd bad feedback here and the there makes no difference to your account.
Juist carry on doing what you are doing, so many fake reviews on amazon now that it just isn't the same as it used to be for feedback. Amazon seem to care more about the product reviews these days than the service reviews these days.
Everything you have done will not get Amazon to change it for you so working on the customer was the only option and clearly this has failed.
Rubbish advice I know but all I can say is you can't win em all.
