Anyone having increased Royal Mail surcharges / managed to appeal these

Hi Guys,

Hope you are all doing well, has anyone been experiencing increased Royal Mail surcharges lately, not fuel surcharge just misdeclared etc ?

Last 2-4 weeks i have had over £400 of charges added to my account either for average weight being misdeclared ( by between 7-14 grams :joy: ) or wrong format : large letter / parcel.

I used to get an email from the mailing centre in the evening it was sent if they checked it and found something wrong then i could ask a question or visit the mailing centre now since the terms changed they just take the money without notification + admin fine, guessing it is a new machine doing it. Only reason i found out is i logged into OBA rather than click and drop

Just so annoying, i have been making every effort to ensure the sizes are correct etc and it makes you nervous posting knowing they can take your weeks profit away just like that. Has any one here every disputed these charges successfully ?

Thank you

I’ve appealed with success. First point of call was to my RM Account Manager who sent me a link on how to start the appeal. It took approx 4-6wks from memory to get a reply but eventually received an email from RM saying they were issuing a credit of the false surcharges. My issue was they said 2 of my my Large Letters were parcels. I suspect they got attached to another item during the automated sorting process hence giving a false reading

Yes we do also get non sense surcharges for sending large letters weight heavier than 750 gram( 4 times in last 3 month). This is impossible because we do not send anything really heavier than 250gram, 99% are less than 100 gram.
So we appealed to RM and they have creditted them. I do not thing they were picked by a human.

I have successfully appealed online give them details from the overcharge notice then take pictures of item with its packaging on a pair of scales showing the weight then take a picture of scales with a calibrating weight on them. (in my case a 500g tor weight).
Doing it this way they get cleared in a couple of days. Not had one rejected yet.

We have just been hit with almost £400 worth of charges for everything posted between 14/02-18/02 - we sent 191 large letters and they have said 103 are parcels which is impossible as we do not send parcels with Royal Mail as we use MyHermes for those.

There was no notification, just happened to be looking in OBA and saw them. We have been sending large letters with Royal Mail for 9 years and now all of a sudden they claim over 50% of what we sent were parcels, what a joke and will definitely be appealing this. Have requested access to the invoicing portal for a deeper look as now fear everything we sent this week may show up charges also. For some reason the charges themselves don`t show up until a week after posting so its not real time!!

Woke up this morning to more surcharges - a Large Letter being charged as 1350g parcel. Off I got to fill out another Finance Contact form…

They can’t keep doing this it must wasting so much time replying to the appeal forms for one thing, i am sure it must be a computer doing these surcharges rather than a person from Revenue protection.

Are all your surcharges raised early in morning between 2-5am when you look on the invoice date via oba ?

Its a disheartening feeling, almost frightened to look what they have charged you the last night as it wipes your profit out if the appeal is dismissed,

Let us know how the appeals go

So got access to the finance portal…

They state we booked large letters up to 750g which is not right as we average all of ours in the 101-250g bracket. It appears they have measured the depth of each as bigger than 250mms so they are marked as parcel. This is absolute nonsense as I have drilled down to which orders this related to and there is no way in the world some of these orders were even close to the limit they set let alone over 250mm. For 9 years we have been sending large letters and never had a problem, I will be most definitely appealing this.

We have the same issue. 4 surcharges have been issued already, one of these surcharges from a single day and they are claiming that we have 90 items in 120 Items were small parcels rather than Large letters.Since then we have received 3 more and I am sure there are more to come.

On our last Surcharge, 10% were allegedly declared incorrectly and has height more than 25mm. Issue is that all our products have the same product packaging i.e. Products L X B X H is same and the packaging used is also the same. So it should either be 100% or 0%

Our product along with the packaging is around 23mm but their machines have picked up some of these with H of 42mm.

We have been posting for almost 6 years and have also posted the products directly from the post office, product always falls into the Large letter category.

Products are also enrolled in Amazon FBA Small & Light and had no issues whatsoever.

RM needs to Fix this as this will clearly be a lot of wasted time for many of us!

We have 2 charges where Declared Weight was more than Weight Measured! And 2 charges where the weights were the same!

What’s going on?
