UK seller, <£10k turnover, but Amazon says I need to be VAT registered?
Hi. I am a UK based individual and sell on ebay etc, and have just opened a professional account as I want want to sell on amazon FBA. I have had an email saying I need to upload a VAT number within 90 days. I am not VAT registered, and don’t need to be (yet). I deal with my tax affairs via self assessment.
Do I really need to be VAT registered to sell via Amazon FBA?

The answer is ordinarily no based on what you said. Can you share the message?

When you registered, did amazon ask for proof of your UTR number ?
Have you registered any other address on amazon aside from your UK address ?
Maybe a ship from address for FBA shipments in China etc ?
Or are you on holiday etc and logging in from another country where Amazon is picking up your IP address ?

I would suggest getting registered for VAT if you plan to grow on Amazon to avoid problems. Amazon doesn’t really want non-VAT sellers!
I had my account suspended for 3 weeks saying I need to be VAT registered even though I was below the 85K threshold. The only way I could get my account reactivated was to register for VAT.

ok i have sold on amazon for over a year without VAT issues… the second i selected FBA within 10 minutes i had an email giving me 90 days to provide VAT details, so i guess its just the way amazon want it… just like they have many other over the top rules… but if you want to trade on amazon then following their wishes is one of the costs
being registered for vat is no real pain… and infact a bonus sometimes as all the little bits that you use for the business you can claim the VAT back on…

No you don’t have to be vat registered until you earned 85,000 .
You can apply exception , that’s what I did

Hi,
Keep calm. Keep obeying Amazon. Keep fulfilling your orders…
Thank you.
